He is lucky. Sharks apparently love seal and don’t like humans. But a shark bite is often deadly. I used to nervously watch for sharks while surfing in Santa Cruz.
That would tend to put a chill on my surfing passion. I had a close encounter with a large hammerhead off LBI in New Jersey back in the 80s. My board collected dust in the garage for 10 years before I got on it again.
Surfboards are essentially oversized fishing lures without the hooks.
