The Royal Society held a Scientific Discussion Meeting on "The detection of extra-terrestrial life and the consequences for science and society" in 2010 but there has been no global agreement on how to handle contact.
Learning how to decipher an alien language or method of communication is likely to be one of the major hurdles that experts will need to consider.
In a recent BBC documentary First Contact: An Alien Encounter, scientists admitted it may never be possible to understand what aliens are trying to tell us.
Dr Alexander Rehding, professor of music at Harvard University, said humans had still not learned how to translate animal communication.
“Whales are a really good study, and they are in some ways the closest thing that we have to aliens here on Earth,” he said.
“Whales are highly intelligent, and their environment is entirely different from ours. The patterns that we hear are purely patterns that we recognise as music, repeated patterns.
“It is a form of vocalising but we don't really know what it's for. Is it music, is it a language? What does it mean? It can give us a sense of how difficult the task at hand is.”
Dr Elliott admitted that deciphering an alien language would be tricky without some kind of extraterrestrial Rosetta Stone.
“Nevertheless, much can be gleaned, without this. Language for intelligent species has a structured system that is multi-layered and has internal structure," he said.
“By identifying any patterns within the signal and calculating how these patterns interact, we will then be able to know if it passes this initial surface structure test for displaying evidence of being language-like.
“If so, we will then be able to move on to identifying internal structures displayed by all known intelligent species.

I stongly disagree, Jacques Vallée did a very deep dive researching this and found the encounters to literally align with the conepts of demonism and not those of any rational advanced physical intelligence. As for impacts in history, there are numerous examples such as the OOPs artifacts and the megiolithic structures. I am a little surprised you seem to claim no impact.

There may be thousands of technological civilizations just in this galaxy alone, but if there are, then they're too far away to get here. Science fiction writers more likely than scientists.
But I guess if you believe in the myth of man made global warming, and in the myth that electric vehicles have fewer emissions than ICE vehicles, then you can also believe that aliens can visit us (NOT the kind of aliens that we've had 5,000,000 of cross over our southern border in the last two years)

That is based upon what we know now. Our heavy-duty physics is less than 200 years old. Have you noticed the bizarre things just now coming from the studies of quantum physics? What are the implications of quantum entanglement? We don't know where this leads. Maybe folks "out there" do know.

Absolutely. Science has lost its luster for the very reasons you mention. They are just chasing grant money and, in some cases, fudging their research to get it.

I do not believe the UFO stuff has a single origin. We seem to observing things that are physical and things that are ethereal. The two may be related, yet they might not be. I suspect we are lumping things into the same intellectual pile that do not actually sort out that way.
