FROM THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC: The Main Body of the Rebels Still Between Bunker’s Hill and Winchester; The Rebel Pickets Driven from Upperville (10/31/1862)

BERLIN, Thursday, Oct. 30.

A deserter from a South Carolina regiment has arrived within our lines, who was condemned to be shot, to-day, for attempting the same thing some time since. He says that nine are now under sentence of death for straggling while on the march. He effected his escape from the guard-house on Saturday evening, and bid in the woods until the coast was clear.

The rebel citizens in Virginia, in anticipation of a movement of the National troops, are sending all their horses to the rebel army for service, for fear they might fall into our hands.

Gen. PLEASANTON is now seizing all horses to be found for the use of the Government, without reference to the opinions of the owners.

It has been definitely ascertained that the main body of the rebels is between Banker Hill and Winchester.

All quiet at Sharpsburgh.

LATEST REPORTS FROM HEADQUARTERS

HEADQUARTERS, ARMY OF THE POTOMAC,

Thursday Evening, Oct. 30.

A force of cavalry, belonging to the command of Gen. KELLEY, left Cumberland yesterday, making a forced march into Virginia, in search of rebel marauding cavalry, who had been committing depredations in that section.

They marched all night, and came up with them this morning, capturing sixteen prisoners and twenty horses; also, one hundred and fifty head of cattle, which these guerrillas had stolen from the citizens of an adjoining county.

The rebel pickets, under Gen. WALKER, at Upperville, were driven from that place yesterday afternoon. The infantry were said to have marched to Snickersville, their intention, evidently, being to escape to the right of Blue Ridge Mountains by way of Snicker's Gap. This is the only news from that section, to-day.

The orders of the Commanding-General of this army are being carried out day and night with all possible dispatch.

"A deserter from a South Carolina regiment has arrived within our lines, who was condemned to be shot, to-day, for attempting the same thing some time since. He says that nine are now under sentence of death for straggling while on the march."

Now deserters and traitors are treated like heroes by democraps. Curious how that's completely forgotten about today.
