A new study succeeded in significantly improving social skills and the condition of the autistic brain through pressure chamber therapy. In it, the researchers identified changes in the brain, including a reduction in neuroinflammation, which is known to be associated with autism.
Moreover, a significant improvement was found in the social functioning of the animal models treated in the pressure chamber. The study's success has implications regarding the applicability and understanding of treating autism using pressure chamber therapy.
Hyperbaric medicine is a form of therapy in which patients are treated in special chambers where the atmospheric pressure is higher than the pressure we experience at sea level, and in addition are delivered 100% oxygen to breathe.
Hyperbaric medicine is considered safe, and is already being used to treat a long list of medical conditions. Scientific evidence has been accumulating that unique protocols of hyperbaric treatments improve the supply of blood and oxygen to the brain, thereby improving brain function.
In the preliminary phase, a girl was treated. Upon completing a series of treatments in the pressure chamber, it was evident that the girl's social abilities and brain function had improved considerably.
In the next stage, the researchers used adult animal models carrying the same genetic mutation in the SHANK3 gene as that carried by the girl who had been treated. The experiment comprised a protocol of 40 one-hour treatments in a pressure chamber, which lasted several weeks.
They "discovered that treatment in the oxygen-enriched pressure chamber reduces inflammation in the brain and leads to an increase in the expression of substances responsible for improving blood and oxygen supply to the brain, and therefore brain function. In addition, we saw a decrease in the number of microglial cells, immune system cells that indicate inflammation, which is associated with autism.

I’m not autistic, but I want to try…
from the article:
It's not as much fun without 15 of your friends sharing the pressure chamber with you.
The guy watching the chamber can't speak English.
Right now he/she isn’t working due to celebrating Diwali…
Might be good for my hemorrhoids too.
You don’t know how true that is, lol. And many of them have zero common sense. Welcome to the VA...
My wife is a retired nurse and department head. The comment on the person working the machine not knowing English was from experience. The sad truth is that Medical mistakes by incompetent people kill and injure more patients than the reasons they came to the hospital for medical treatment to begin with. It is truer now than it was before the "pandemic".
LOL, You want to here something funny. My VA pulmonologist wrote in his report that I was highly opinionated. POS, haha. Being the kind of guy I am, I once researched making a homemade hyperbaric chamber hoodie out of a CPAP. The head of the AMA told me one would probably benefit me greatly, bless her heart.
LOL, that’s awesome.
The nurses at the place I mentioned are the only ones I have high regard for. One who took care of me when I spent a week in the hospital came to visit with me after her shift was over. I told her I was glad she got to see me. I wouldn’t have got any follow up testing after my stay in the hospital if it hadn’t been for her.
The problem is that so many of the good nurses lost their jobs because they wouldn’t take the experimental jabs after developing natural immunity.
bookmark.
Things like gluten-free and other diet changes, sensory integration therapies, and good old fashioned love from Mom AND Dad (there is an oft-cited stat, which I never validated, that 90% of marriages fail when there is an autistic child...you need to look no further to see the work of the devil here) easily trump drugging Mary and "Mr Jones, you need to accept that Johnny will never be normal."
To be sure, children who are profoundly autistic may not benefit as much from therapies versus higher-functioning autists. And, while I'm here, not all "alternative" therapies ARE good.
The real EVIL in this saga, is the active and coordinated suppression of therapies, information, data, and dialogue on autism. You're automatically a nut-job if you haven't institutionalized Johnny. You're an anti-vaxxer if you even QUESTION the efficacy of injecting 18-month olds with a conga line of liquids. But if you prescribe a healthy dose of Thorazine to Johnny, you're back on the party circuit - I can only quote Metallica - "keep him tired, it makes him well, he's getting better, can't you tell?"
Parenthetically, "snake oil" etc came under fire legislatiively via the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. This led to the creation of the Food and Drug Administration. Its main purpose was to ban foreign and interstate traffic in adulterated or mislabeled food and drug products - once again, a bastardization of the Commerce Clause. And in a twist not lost on y'all, it concentrated the power to define "Truth" with the govt. 116 years later, all that has changed is the seller of snake oil.
Again, different strokes for different folks. Meds have worked in cases, and eliminating wheat lifts a "fog" in other cases. Let the free market of ideas and therapies flourish, allow parents to make informed decisions based on all available information. And may medical poseurs like Fauci et al who just KNOW the "Truth," become anthema.
A quality post as usual.
Usually a multitude of solutions exist, and are good in combination, instead of a singular silver bullet.
P.S. Back when Metallica was good. :)
Thanks for posting this. I wonder what else can be done to reduce neuro inflammation.
“...116 years later, all that has changed is the seller of snake oil.”
Chisel that in stone.
Also...the pressure treatment chamber seems to offer some relief for autistic kids...and their parents. Both deserve a break.
Speaking as a borderline spectrum introvert, I inadvertently used the weighted blanket technique myself as a young adult while undergoing (unrelated) medical procedures -- nurses had to bring me four or five blankets to calm me down whenever needles were involved.
I've grown out of a lot of it over the decades, and also benefited from many years' worth of meditation and prayer, and a healthier diet than in childhood and youth. Still love me some heavy bedcovers when insomnia hits.
Interesting! As a autist, I’ve cut out gluten and have seen some benefit. At its core, it has to be some kind of autoimmune issue. I have several and so do most people I know on the spectrum.
It might be useful for dementia and alzheimers. COPD’ers might need to use a higher co2 blend to reduce co2/o2 trapping though.
