Got a bum ticker? It's time to eat some plant-based omega-3 (ALA)

In a new study, researchers found that heart failure patients with lower alpha-linolenic acid levels (ALA, the main plant omega-3) had a worse prognosis during follow-up compared with individuals with higher levels. The benefits of dietary omega-3 fatty acids has been well-established in previous studies, but research into ALA levels and heart failure risk has been less explored.

"We hope these findings can pave the way for future trials to test whether regular consumption of foods rich in ALA could serve as a preventive strategy to improve outcomes and promote quality of life in heart failure patients with low circulating ALA," said Aleix Sala-Vila.

The researchers obtained data and blood samples from 905 ambulatory patients with heart failure between June 2006 and September 2020. The researchers tested blood samples for ALA levels and were broken down as a percentage of the total of 20 determined fatty acids. After a follow-up of 2.4 years, the researchers documented 140 all-cause deaths, 85 cardiovascular deaths and 141 first heart failure hospitalizations.

The researchers observed statistically significant reductions for all-cause death, first heart failure hospitalization and cardiovascular death in individuals with higher blood serum levels of ALA.

The findings show that once heart failure is present in an individual, increasing ALA levels may be tied to a better prognosis. In addition, plant-based diets may have a positive effect on heart failure prognosis, and foods rich in ALA (flaxseed oil, walnuts, chia and canola oil) are a possible preventive tool to stop or delay the continuum of heart failure.

"The findings from the researchers are hypothesis generating. Their proposal of a potential role for this source of nutrition in improving the morbidity and mortality rates of patients with heart failure cannot be substantiated yet," said Abdallah Al-Mohammad. "This study opens the field into more questions."

It can’t hurt to get more Alpha Linolenic acid, but generally, fish based Omega-3s have been considered better utilized. Only 15-20% of ALA gets converted into EPA or DHA, the main Omega-3s in our cells.

Is this like the oil extract
from the Green Lipped Muscle
from the pristine waters of New Zealand?

They are also pimping for Canola Oil, an industrial seed oil. These types of oils are only trouble!

Just make sure you get your clot shot before you eat all that fish.

I wish I had started two years ago keeping a list of all the things that can cause heart attacks in young people (especially young men). I would have quite a list by now. But here a few that have come to my attention recently.

Running
Dancing
Swiming
singing
Cold showers
hot showers
rowing
soccer
too much fish
too little fish
cold air
warm air
standing up to fast

The list would go on and on. Why didn’t the doctors tell us this before now?

15-20% is WAY high (5% on the high side, and only for women).

The ‘plant-based’ ALA is marketing BS. Cheaper ways to get fiber.

Interestingly, we may both be right:

“Many studies have shown that an increased ALA consumption leads to an increased blood EPA concentration, as reviewed in [1]. It is estimated that the rate of conversion of ALA into EPA in the liver is about 21% in women and between 0.3% and 8% in men [1, 2].”

I’ve seen those figures. They can’t back ‘em up.

If the one was true, women would have a life expectancy >10 years greater than current stats over men.

When I was doing outreach, one of my favorite discussions was regarding health marketing BS, such as the false labeling (which is ongoing) regarding omega 3 content of juice drinks etc. ‘fortified’ with chia/flax seed.
