5 tourists trapped underground at Grand Canyon Caverns after elevator breaks

Five people have been trapped 200 feet underground for more than 24 hours at the Grand Canyon Caverns in Arizona after an elevator at the tourist attraction malfunctioned, authorities said Monday.

The five tourists became stranded inside the country’s largest dry caverns — where there is an underground hotel suite and restaurant — at sundown Sunday, Coconino Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jon Paxton told NBC News.

The individuals have medical conditions that prevented them from climbing 20 flights of stairs to reach above ground in Peach Springs, Paxton told Fox News.

The stairwell is similar to an old fire escape, compounding the issue of accessibility, he added.

It is something to see!

Even my little children (who would have rather gone to Disney than The Grand Canyon) were impressed.

We got there early in the morning and it was fogged over. We went and had some breakfast. We cam back and the fog was halfway gone- that alone was an amazing sight. Seeing a river of clouds following the valley below you.

An hour later all the fog had cleared and we spent hours just looking at it.

I’m sure! I think I need to start planning that trip. You never know when it’s your time, and I’ve been talking about going there for years. Time to take action!

"The Caverns aren’t near the actual Park. It’s almost 100 miles away..."

Whoops!
I didn't know that.
Thanks!

My Dad loved the sights of America, and for our summer vacations we would pile in the station wagon (all 8 of us!) and tent camp across the U.S. for 2 or 3 weeks, or whatever time off he could afford. The Grand Canyon is still one of my favorite vistas, but I was a teenager the last time I was there. Flying over it is impressive, too, but nothing beats being there on the rim.

I haven’t slept in a parked car since Michael Jordan’s father died...

Do it! Don't wait.
I've been planning to go see the redwood forests in California for decades.
And I don't know if I'll ever do it now.

I go by that place twice a week.

BTW..for all you who might travel through. DO NOT go over the speed limit in Peach Springs!

And get your gas BEFORE you go through Seligman or any of the places along Rt 66...get it at Williams or Kingman.

BTW..coming from Kingman, before you get to Truxton, or after if coming from Peach Springs way, look at the bluffs on the north side of 66. The end one looks like an Indian chief pointing looking at it at the right angle.

If you travel on I 40, stop at the Meteor Crater. Its just off I 40 west of Winslow.

In Holbrook, you may want to check this out on the way.

Both places will only take a couple hours to check out and you’ll be on your way to the GC.

Oh the horrors...

Have you no compassion? I can relate to these peoples predicament. Once on safari in Africa I lost my corkscrew and had nothing to live on but food and water for seven days. So I know how they feel.

Kind of a melodramatic headljne.headline.. they were trapped in a hotel / restaurant.

This is actually, as the crow flies, about 18 miles from the GC. Down on Route 66, East of Peach Springs.

Hey, it’s been sealed up in cans and stored at a constant temperature. I’d at least try it if I were starving.

Once on Safari in Africa I shot an elephant in my pajamas...

Thanks. Interesting dude. He grew up where I live now, in Hendricks County, Indiana, though I’m not in Liberty township. That’s nearby.

Nature gave us claustrophobia to warn us about going deep down into a hole in the ground in a steel cage that can stop working with no backup system.
