An Australian woman has sparked a wave of internet backlash after posting a photo of herself on an American Airlines flight complaining about having to sit beside two "obese people."
Sydney Watson, an Australia-American conservative political commentator, took to Twitter to share her experience while on a three-hour American airline flight.
Sydney Watson complained to American Airlines about being 'wedged between two obese people.' "I am currently — literally — WEDGED between two OBESE people on my flight," Watson tweeted.
"This is absolutely NOT acceptable or okay. If fat people want to be fat, fine. But it is something else entirely when I'm stuck between you, with your arm rolls on my body, for 3 hours."
Watson's complaint was met with immediate backlash from other social media users, who accused her of being extremely fatphobic and downright mean.
However, Watson doubled down on her post, saying that she doesn't care 'if this is mean.'
"I can't even put the arm rests down on either side because there's no f-king room. I'm sick of acting like fatness to this extent is normal. Let me assure you, it is not," she wrote.
The official Twitter account for American Airlines quickly responded to Watson's viral post, rebuffing her claims.
"Our passengers come in all different sizes and shapes. We're sorry you were uncomfortable on your flight," the airline wrote.
Though, a week later, Watson, who demanded "reparations" for being forced to sit in the middle seat, received an email from American Airlines offering her compensation.
In the email shared by Watson, the airline apologized for the discomfort and offered her a $150 coupon.
"We do our best to avoid uncomfortable situations regarding seats. I can understand your disappointment with the situation not being remedied to your satisfaction. It seems that our Flight Attendants were not able to make changes to the seating arrangement," the email stated.
In response to American Airlines offering her the coupon, Watson continued her tirade against the airline company, tweeting that she'd rather give the coupon "to someone who needs PT or a gym membership."
True, but it was a non stop from La Guardia to Phoenix so the memories are not that great. George Floyd had nothing on me
That was good. I like the actual bitch best…
At least you didn’t take fentanyl.
That’s what 5 hours?
I would have just locked myself in the toilet…
The higher ups have made the decisions to narrow the seats.
The crews obviously know seats have gotten smaller, but they can’t do anything about it.
Airline policy could change and not allow people to purchasecertain seats if they can’t fit in them without spilling over grossly into another persons seat. They didn’t pay to take up another persons space that they paid for. Same dam thing with luggage, if its too big to fit in a certain space, its not allowed as carry-on.
Ok, she had a bad flight. Now, she should get on with her life. Instead, she just goes on and on. Give me a break! Sorry for her husband.
She had every right to expect to put the arm rests down so she can have her space. Plus, the entertainment controls are on the arm rests.
If the other passengers need the arm rests to be up so they can fit in their own seats plus a few inches of her seat, then she has a point.

Agree. They charge extra money for extra luggage baggage — how about extra body baggage.
The FReeper recommending exit seats has the right idea too.
That’s gotta be the worst argument ever!
Sorry if your not, but you sound like a demoRAT troll!
Sounds like she paid for her seat and doesn’t need ANYONE encroaching in her space, whether overweight or otherwise, period!!!!’
If your overweight, pay for your space, you buy two seats! Not consider yourself owed someone else’s.
NOT GUILTY!
exactly....let them all pretend the seats are the same size with the same leg space from even 20 yrs ago....this was done with the knowledge that Americans in particular are becoming heavier....
I'm overweight and do not fly very often....I usually sit like a mummy with arms turned in to the middle of my body....I do not take up anybody's space...
All eaters are NOT equal when it comes to Wright Flight.
And the LAWS of Physics.
I thought that they had to be able to put down the arm rests
Always pick the isle seat. always.
I couldn’t tell how squished she was, from tweets posted in article.
Looking forward to a great payday
Airlines could start making certain rows with wider seats for extra large people and charge them for those seats. When they check in the attendant verifies that they need to sit in the oversized rows and that they are charged accordingly.
I’d pay for an extra wide seat and I’m a small woman.
.
I agree I’m astonished at people taking up for the overweight people who are basically stealing part of the seat she paid for, and saying she should pay extra for first class! Rather than the overweight people should pay for a larger seat.
That’s lefty thinking at its finest! I’m so surprised to see that on FR!
I skimmed a lot of comments on the original twitter post and I bet a third were taking up for the fat people and saying she was awful to expect her full seat that she paid for. Wow the way people think is so upside down these days. She is “mean” and “fat shaming” to be disgruntled… 🤦♀️
