It is, but proper procedure is to test and activate it before a jump.

It doesn’t look like any malfunction I’ve ever seen. The canopy is fully inflated and looks pretty normal. The hard spiral appears deliberate, however, that sort of aggressive maneuvering usually causes the trailing edge of the canopy to be noticeably bent downward on the inboard side. But there’s no bending visible in the video.
He has both hands on the risers and appears to be conscious because he can be seen bending and straightening his legs.
There’s no telling from the video how long he’d been in the spiral before it began being captured on video but apparently long enough for someone to pull out their smart phone and start filming. Unfortunately it was one of those people who hasn’t figured out the phone can be held sideways, too.
From the start of the video (as shown) there’s a good six seconds before the news station cut-away, which should have been plenty of time for him to to cut away from his main and deploy the reserve chute.
>>The appearance of a crumpled body mid-field tends have that affect.<<
Medical examiners tell me that a skyjumper’s body looks normal, but EVERY bone is broken.
“It was the only time my husband has been skydiving. Thankfully he learned a lesson from someone else’s misfortune.”
That is the best way to learn. Unfortunately most of us have to learn the hard way, by personal experience.

Actually, I believe you so much that just by reading these stories, there is no doubt that skydiving will never appear on my bucket list.
Did he land on the playing field?
RIP sir, jumping takes guts.
