A former Kentucky appeals court judge and one-time gubernatorial candidate died in a house fire Thursday after heroically saving his wife, authorities said.
Former judge Tom Emberton, 90, sprang into action after his home in the city of Edmonton went up in flames around 3:30 a.m.
“He heroically rescued his wife and got her to safety,” Edmonton Mayor Doug Smith told local ABC affiliate WBKO.
“Then he went back in to save his home and lost his life,” the mayor said.
Emberton ran for governor of Kentucky in 1971 and was appointed to the Kentucky Court of Appeals in 1987.
“Tom was just the greatest guy in the world to be around. He was infectious to everybody,” Smith said to WBKO. “He had a way about him that was really special.
”Emberton was re-elected to the Court of Appeals twice and served as chief judge of the appellate court until he retired in 2004, according to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).
McConnell served on Emberton’s gubernatorial campaign.

Not the best eulogy
Why did he go back in?...
“McConnell served on Emberton’s gubernatorial campaign.”
Also not the best eulogy.
Maybe to try to save the house or some personal possessions. Something that may be of financial or sentimental value?
It’s a shame. Now he’s dead and the wife is alone.
Hopefully she has family near.
Heros come in all shapes, sizes and ages.
Maybe there was a pet.
True, but 90 years is a good run.
Could be, but not mentioned. Sad either way.
But unfortunately not good enough to run back into a burning building. But bless him for trying.
True, about 13 more than average.
If any death is ever glorious, dying saving your wife is it.
It’s a glorious way to go. She will be with him soon. RIP.
At 90 it was probably not so much to save the home, but more likely a lifetime of personal treasures. Prayers up.
A noble death. Rest in Peace, Sir.
RIP.
