I knew a girl named Pam who was of Polish-German heritage, but she was seriously considering translating her last name to Spanish because "affirmative action" policies were making it all but impossible for her to get a job in public relations or as an administrative assistant. Her prospective employers told her that although her qualifications were excellent, they had to hire a black or minority. She finally gave up and started a business.

“Pamela” wasn’t an unusual name for a black woman 30-plus years ago. (Example - actress Pam Grier)

Not buying the reincarnation story, though... Kids are imaginative. Grownups tend to add their own meanings to what kids say sometimes.
