The guy they are looking at shot at six people breaking into his junkyard 10 years ago.
He outdid himself this time. They went there to rob him and Kennedy killed them all(most likely), cut them up and threw them into the river. The smart one begged out.
They think Kennedy may off himself.

My first guess was a salvage yard like the one in the movie “Goldfinger”, where the target could be shot and left in the car, and then squish it into a cube and haul it off in a Ford Falcon pickup.

Like I said, a good guess... bet the detectives suspect that. They said “just want to talk to him, but he is not a suspect” means “We know he did it and need to grab him while we can” in police talk.

What puzzles me is: what are you thinking to steal from a junkyard that you will be able to haul away on bicycles?
I guess they must have planned to steal a getaway vehicle too?
