A Linkedin post shared by Canopy CEO Davis Bell is sparking controversy for shedding light on the growing trend of "overemployment," or secretly working two remote jobs at once.
The post went viral on Friday after Bell divulged that Canopy, a mid-sized software company based in Utah, recently fired two engineers who were secretly working two full-time jobs simultaneously. Overemployment has soared during the pandemic, with some saying it allows them to make up to $600,000 a year during a period of record-inflation and soaring housing costs.
"To me, this isn't some fun new social trend," Bell wrote. "It's a new form of theft and deception, and not something in which an ethical, honest person would participate."
The post prompted backlash from several corners of the internet, including the Reddit community "antiwork," with some users arguing that tech CEOs like Jack Dorsey and Elon Musk are lauded for working at multiple companies at once, while regular workers are punished for it. Others speculated that the engineers may have be working two jobs in order to make ends meet.

LOL.
I often state, the only reason Chinese people aren’t the rudest people on Earth is because there are Indian people.
Consider a slightly different scenario. Both companies expect a 40 hr work week. If both get 40 hours, is that theft?
LinkedIn is nothing more then a narcissistic mutual wank off service. It and Facebook should be dissolved.
F that. That’s one thing I liked when I was union.
Call me when I’m off, 2 hours OT.
Make me come in for 5 minutes, 4 hours OT.
About 15 years ago I had a developer working on a project. When I spoke with her, often times she seemed brain dead, took copious notes, but delivered excellent work. Turns out she was the ‘frontman’ for her husband, who did all the coding. Found out when I heard her on the phone making some last minute changes.
Total bs.
Workers do not have job security or loyalty from any company.
If its in the contrsct they signed thats one thing, if not, and they are doing both jobs without problems, its fine.
What if they were working another job not in the tech field?
Unless theres some kind of restriction in your contract, if you even have a contract, you can’t make momey any other way, people are working while they can make money. Economys going under for many. Many people work multiple jobs.
Agreed. The self pimping and woke BS is all over the place.
It seems like every chick has pronouns on their pages as well.
Before there were remote jobs, I knew “engineers” who had full time jobs, but didn’t even work half time. So holding two full time jobs is completely possible.
It’s not being honest. It’s not making it clear to bosses he had more potential, which they obviously thought since they tried to pormote him but he (nephew) chose to slouch and stay in one position to do personal things on company time.
One is under no obligation to "make it clear" to the bosses that one has "more potential."
One is under no obligation to accept a so-called "promotion."

Not if you are receiving full-time employee benefits from the company.
LOL, now you have me thinking...
If people want to "wank off," as you claim, who are we to interfere?
Let them do as they please!
Regards,
There also might be an issue with bennies, especially healthcare bennies.
And if the latter is involved and a double dipper gets caught lying about who covers what, he/she could be in for a world of financial hurt.
I retired from a state university some years ago as a salaried employee. I had to fill out yearly conflict of interest statements. Having a second job or owning a business wasn't a problem, it just had to be disclosed. I don't believe hourly employees had to fill out those forms...
You are supposed to give a kegit 40 hours to your employee. You ain’t got time for a second job IF you’re truly doing your first
Every employment contract I ever signed specifically prohibited working another job
Indeed
“They gave their word to pay me for services agreed on, and I have given my word to provide those services.”
I think it’s a little more complicated than you are making it out to be.
I don’t think anyone’s talking about not providing the agreed upon services. What they mean is they’re providing everything agreed upon and have found ways to streamline the process and get the work done while still being able to do the same for another company.
So, the argument becomes, do they OWN you for a certain number of hours a day or do they hire you to complete certain tasks? And if you complete those tasks in a more efficient manner, are you obligated to say so?
I think you come from a different generation where there was still some loyalty and honor from employers. I find none of that out there today. If I use my skillset in automation to blow through any repetitive work on auto-pilot, IMHO, it’s none of anyone’s business. If I want to play with my kids all day while a script I wrote does my job just as well as I would manually, I see that as a win for everyone. And I don’t see why someone can’t take another job to fill the time if they so desire either. The company is getting the work that was agreed upon at the start. What they’re not getting is ownership of my time. Frankly, I don’t believe they’re entitled to that, but I know other people view things differently.
