When it comes to music videos, I find that honesty and simplicity is best. Sure, you can spend a million dollar budget showing twerking women riding around in Rolls-Royces and men in pimp clothing sipping on Hennessy making funny looking gang signs and such. But where is the art in that?
In this song, Jason Ringenberg plaintively sings about how his beloved town of Nashville has been commoditized by tourism and urban sprawl.
The video shot in downtown Nashville is very amateur and done on a budget that wouldn't get you a table for two at the Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville there, but powerful just the same.
The video features Jason Ringenberg himself, wandering the streets and wondering what the hell has happened to his town. A woman named Jill Kettles follows him around with a camera. She does a great job capturing the spirit of the song.
At about the 2:35 mark, you can see a bunch of drunken tourists, bouncing around in a big tour bus, epitomizing how Nashville turned from a town focused on serious country music to a party town that is now essentially Las Vegas minus the casinos (which will probably come later).
I came across this song from hearing it on the Outlaw Country station on Sirius/XM.
Though I love going to Nashville, even today, the song does a pretty good job of lamenting how it used to be back in the day.
Jason Ringenberg - Nashville Without Rhinestones
I left in 99’ and came back 5 years ago and couldn’t believe it. They just had a show on one of those house flipping channels where they bulldozed my old neighborhood to build skinny pants, man bun housing for Cali tapeworms. Plus many parts have become Mexico city or Somalia.
I went to High School at Hume Fogg on 8th and Broad ,
just a few blocks up the road from where that video was
produced . A lot of changes in Nashville since then .
We felt like the City belonged to us , and then ....

BTW, for those who don’t realize, Jason Ringenberg is also lead singer and guitarist for the alt-country band Jason & The Scorchers.

I’m a country boy from Suez township, Mercer county IL, that upon insistance of my wife, moved to TN almost 6 yrs ago. Our youngest son and family are down here. The grandkids were the biggest magnet. We are about 70 miles SW of ‘crashville’ (as us truck drivers call it).
I simply can’t relate to city living. We haven’t gone to downtown Nash for anything but a couple of political rallies. I have trucked in big cities enough to always look forward to getting out of them.
Where we lived in IL was very rural, with 11 people within a 1 mile radius of our house (including the wife and I). Lewis county TN has about the same population as Mercer county IL, but with half the square miles. And even though we live rural here, there are (that I know of) a least 60 people within a 1 mile radius of us.
Been there several times since and I am always amazed at how much bigger it got since last time I was there. It's definitely a fun place but getting very expensive and just a block or two away from the action, you run into the poverty stricken, crime ridden areas that you get in most major cities these days. Traffic is horrendous as well. Last time there, I just used Uber and it was a much better way to get around then to rent a car and hunt for the expensive parking spots.
In terms of appearance, they had a bit of a Stray Cats vibe in that video.
Amen brother. Born and raised in Nashville, let the day after Christmas 2000, and went back a couple of months ago. Jesus what is this place? I still knew my way around from street memory, but all the landmarks are gone along with the memories attached.
I don’t know what it’s trying to become, but I certainly don’t like it.

They sure blew that one up! That’s the tune that I remember them for. On MTV etc.
Love, love, love Nashville.
This guy? Dylan with a higher voice. And not nearly as good. Sorry.
Music row was killed many moons ago. Garth Brooks was one of the perps.

Yeah , Nashville is famous for its crazy traffic
and drivers . One of the DJ’s there cut a record
called ... “Drive like a Nashvillian” ... sung to
the tune of “ Walk like an Egyptian “
Lewis county ... that’s down around Hoenwald
I believe. I was born and raised in Nashville ,
and was a radio announcer there , and in Waverly ,
and also in Benton county , Camden.
