PADRES TAKE DOWN DODGERS WITH FIVE-RUN INNING IN GAME 4
FoxSports.com ^ | Oct. 16, 2022 | Pedro Moura

And as it ended, the skies opened, and rain poured down on this town that sees an average of 10 inches each year...

The seventh inning of this National League Division Series’ fourth game featured two strange rallies, a drone delay and biblical levels of upheaval to this year’s playoff picture...

San Diego’s 5-3 win Saturday at Petco Park meant the 111-win Dodgers won only one postseason game.

The wild thing was the Dodgers actually started their own rally to begin the seventh. Up 2-0 as it began, they managed to add a run without a big hit. They produced a walk, a bunt hit, a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly. That netted one run and put runners on second and third with only one out. From there, though, Max Muncy and Justin Turner could get no more runs home.

Needing to put the ball into play to vault his team ahead, Manny Machado instead struck out. Brandon Drury then popped out, and Jake Cronenworth approached.

The man who’d face him, Alex Vesia, had not had much time to warm up. He stood up in the Dodgers' bullpen only when Drury began to bat, and Drury popped up the first pitch he saw. Roberts had Almonte throw one pitch to Cronenworth, then signaled to catcher Will Smith to go speak to Almonte to supply a few additional seconds. Only after that did Roberts emerge, slowly, to pull Almonte in favor of Vesia.

Vesia’s first two pitches went for strikes, but not his next two, and Soto stole second without a throw. Cronenworth promptly punched the next into center field for a clean single that scored two.

Cronenworth, his teammates and the crowd went berserk. Not long after, the Padres were headed to the NLCS after a dramatic night of baseball....

More than any other sport, Baseball sees underdogs winning

Dodgers and Braves, two of the top teams this year, are both out now, and Yankees are down 2-1 against Cleveland

and there's sure to be some complaints about the new playoff format - Wild Card was a three-game series this year (for the first time), while the top 4 teams (Yankees, Astros, Braves, Dodgers) got a "bye" ... but that bye meant those 4 teams were sitting cold for 6 days while the WC Series played out

these Division Series are only best only 3-of-5, maybe they need to go to a full 7-games to let the bye teams get back in their groove?

congrats to Padres, Phillies, Astros ... only Yankees-Cleveland still going

Ha ha.

I used to be a Dodger fan. Now I root for no team since the players refused to play when cops shot the knife wielding rapist in Wisconsin.

I laugh and enjoy the Dodgers losing now. This after 111 wins is pretty sweet.

No. Dodgers won the World Series in 2020. The 60 game season which doesn’t count.

Gotta say, 2 of 3 and 3 of 5 are crap shoots in baseball. The best team rarely wins. For this and other reasons I have lost most of my passion for MLB. Right now, I am for the Phils, but they are miles away from being the best, and should not have been in the playoffs at all.

Baseball is unwatchable.

Claustrophobic shots of the pitcher, catcher, batter with the distracting digital box. Like it’s a video game. Then close ups of the the players in the dugout.

If and when there is a hit you have to wait until the THIRD replay to see the wide-view play on the field. By that time, the excitement of it is over.

Combined with aggressively annoying commercials? No thanks

should also add,

there is a further controversy because SD limited ticket sales to area counties only, in an attempt to keep LA fans from taking over Petco Field

now there’s questions of whether that’s legal ... but didn’t the Nashville Predators do something similar already?

Uh, no they didn’t.

Braves won last year...beat the Dodgers to get there, iirc.

[But the Braves choked bigly this year...]

Sorry...I have no interest watching the Cleveland Transgenders or the Atlanta Non Binaries. When pro athletes started kneeling at the National Anthem and when teams started renaming themselves I completely lost interest.

If MLB were to expand the playoff series yet again, baseball playoffs would be like those of basketball and hockey, taking forever to complete, and making the regular season of less and less importance. We need fewer, not more playoff games.

Television sports and news is unwatchable which is why I cancelled cable TV some time ago. All those whiz-bang graphics, the scrolling bars at the bottom, the shouting announcers, it all gives me a headache and stresses me out. Too much noise!

Don’t watch much sports anymore, but when I do it seems that the directors are more interested in displaying ALL their toys instead of the event itself. jmo

“All those whiz-bang graphics, the scrolling bars at the bottom, the shouting announcers, it all gives me a headache and stresses me out. Too much noise!”

The purpose of those graphics and scrolling bars is to brainwash the viewer.

It turns out that our brains turn into “obedience” mode (we are hypnotized) when we see graphics that rapidly reverse direction and strobe light type effects.

Irrational howling at the moon by fellow humans enhances the effect!

Baseball is unwatchable.

If I'm tired but can't fall to sleep, I'll turn on any major league baseball game...it's better that Nexium.

When I wake up the channel is running commercials on how to lose weight and increase your sexual prowess in only three weeks, for only $19.95...what a deal.

I'm glad I don't watch the TV anymore then. When I'm in the mood for a movie or documentary, I can stream it on my computer.

I used to like baseball a lot when I was a kid. I'd go to Fenway Park and buy a scorecard and pencil so I could score the game. There was a certain pureness to scoring the game back then as every at-bat had a square box in which you had to fill in the result of every pitch. That took a bit of discipline as you had to pay attention to every pitch.

Scoreboards were primitive back then and did not show instant replays so if you missed something, you had to ask the person next to you what just happened.

Nowadays, kids at games are always restless. They can't sit still for more than an inning and a half without having to get up to use the bathroom, get a soda, a taco, or whatever. Even when they are sitting, they are glued to their cellphones and not really watching the game at all.

I say the same thing. The camera folks are in love with themselves.

Bring back the days of the single camera way up, behind home plate. More like the actual experience of being the average fan in the cheap seats.
