My uncle joined the Army during Korean war but he had flat feet and had to stay state side.

He did get to do something memorable.....

Yes, an extreme talent and showman! I was fortunate to see him perform in person.

I never understood this song until I realized it was meant to be sung by a pathetically delusional guy, alone, into a glass of whiskey . It doesn’t make sense any other way.

Way too late he has realized he messed up in losing her and he’s kidding himself that he could win her back. I mean “I banged everyone in town but you were always on my mind”? Or “I completely ignored you but you were always on my mind”? Only someone who’s delusional would cling to that tiny thread regarding the girl he pushed away.

What year was this? And why is that so hard to figure out?

An uncle of mine was on a school trip to the MS gulf coast in the mid 50's when he and a couple of friends decided to hitchhike to a bar in Long Beach they'd heard would serve alcohol to minors. They went there and got their drinks then were hitchhiking back along Hwy 90 when a guy in a Cadillac picked them up. It was Elvis and he gave them a ride back to Biloxi. My uncle said he was as nice as he could be and he had a coffee can full of shelled pecans that his mother had sent him so they ate pecans all the way back. My uncle also said he was afraid Elvis was going to run off the road because he was turned around talking the whole way.

Years later I end up working at the airport in Memphis which is about a mile from Graceland. Some of the old timers I worked with were friends of friends of Elvis and a common theme was how much he quietly helped people in need in Memphis. He'd hear of a child needing some kind of expensive medical treatment and the money would just show up anonymously. He didn't want it known where it came from but he did a lot of things like that.

Great human being, there'll never be another like him.
