Pat Summerall and John Madden did the best promo reads for Angela Lansbury’s ‘Murder, She Wrote’

Pat Summerall’s ad reads for ‘Murder, She Wrote’ always had the CBS crew in stitches.

Legendary actor Angela Lansbury passed away on Tuesday at the age of 96, leaving behind an enormous legacy in film, television, and on-stage performances. Lansbury already had a brilliant career when she debuted as detective Jessica Fletcher in the hit series “Murder, She Wrote” at 60 years old. The detective show ran from 1984 to 1996 and was a huge part of Sunday night programming on CBS for more than a decade.

That of course means we have a sports tie-in.

Pat Summerall and John Madden were long-time NFL broadcasters for CBS while “Murder, She Wrote” was running. Summerall used to have to read promos for the show during games, and always made it a point to drag out the empty space where the comma in the show’s title would go. After Lansbury’s passing, NFL Films dug up an old video of Summerall’s promo reads, which always had the CBS crew in stitches.

“MURDER ....................... SHE WROTE.”

Madden got all of the attention in the broadcast booth partially because of the video game bearing his name, but don’t forget that Summerall is a Hall of Famer in his own right.

There was a episode of Murder She Wrote where Angela Lansbury's character inherits a small, but decisive ownership stake in a professional football team. Dick Butkus is on the staff of the team. So is an actor credited as Bruce Jenner. He has a deaf daughter who is central to the plot, and who take a liking to Angela Lansbury's character.

On repeats, that actor is still credited as Bruce Jenner. Isn't that considered a hate crime, worse than anything Hitler ever did, these days?

I remember the networks pushing these shows. Of course, “60 Minutes” was mainly pushed. I remember the NBC guys hawking Punky Brewster as if it were high drama.

Was Punky Brewster by Shakespeare or Ibsen?

Hearing Pat Summerall and John Madden call football brings back such great memories. What America was.

They have to credit the talent as they were listed on the original credits. I know you were joking…but that’s why early appearances of some actors use different names or slightly different names for some famous folks.

Didn’t there used to be an Olympic athlete that was a dude with that name?

Been so long ago, it’s hard to remember.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I miss the 1980s.

Like Jameel Farah in Blackboard Jungle with Glenn Ford.

Later known as Corporal Klinger.
