It's a manic moment as male cactus bees envelop a single female. But who in this amorous scrum will emerge lucky and get to mate with her?
This remarkable picture, captured by Karine Aigner, is the grand title winner in this year's Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.
On one level it's quite a technical image. It required the use of a macro probe lens to get in close to the very heart of the action.
"I had to spend quite a bit of time on my belly in the dirt," Karine joked.

Strange but cool pic. For some reason it brought to mind the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court hearings.

Iโve used a macro lens a bunch over the years. The depth of field is very narrow. In order to get that shot is amazing.
Some of the professional-grade digital cameras are pretty close to magic.

Modern cameras are great, but it is the specialty lenses that let we photographers really work the magic under the right conditions. That said, the photo is truly great!

My first thought the moment I saw the image.
Where is Gloria Allred. Must be a Republican female bee, because the usual leftists who run the groups that decide what photographs win really enjoyed the image.
She looks like sheโs had a few scrums herself.
