I think you hit the nail on the head; there are certainly implied or unwritten rules about appointing a Republican to be a college or university president. The rule applies to Rhinos and anti Trumpers as well.
It is not just the student snowflakes, but faculty, staff and administrators as well.

All I need to know about Sasse is that the left hates him. That makes him okay in my book.
I don’t care for Ben Sasse, let’s face it, if he doesn’t meddle in the athletic department and sticks to education, I’m good with him, he can’t be more liberal than some of the recent fools that have been UF President.
He’s a Republican and that is all that matters
