The Civil War produced many noteworthy effects, but not the least of these--I know I am far from the first to say so--was the stage for the exhibition of Abraham Lincoln's intellect and character.

As Halsey said a century later, “There are no great men, only great challenges that ordinary men are forced by circumstances to meet.” But Lincoln was well-prepared....
