Long list with a lot of negative comments.
Sammy Davis Jr. disliked “The Candy Man” so much, he rushed through recording his vocals in two takes, convinced “the song is going straight to the toilet, pulling his career down with it”. It ended up being his only Number One Hit, spending three weeks at the top of the Billboard Top 100.
Haha, that’s pretty cool. Having grown up in the boring midwest, I don’t have any interesting stories like that. I don’t even think anybody halfway famous grew up in or near our podunk town.
Okay, just remembered a correction - I think a second cousin my Dad’s side was in Grand Funk Railroad, but I never met the dude.
Whatevs.
At least you got a cool story out of it.
Hmm ... Actually, second correction ... Lance Parrish’s (of Detroit Tigers 1984) daughter went to our church, and was in our youth group. And yes, she was hot.
Never asked her anything. I was a shy kid. Go figure.
Go figure.
Still the funniest moment in TV history, Archie Bunker asking Sammy, “Do you take cream and sugar in your eye?”
Does anyone else (besides me) know where the Afternoon Delight song came from, developed, or anything about those who created the music ? It’s one thing to not like songs or genres and another to be ignorant. Take “The Sultans of Swing” as another example. Watch the 1978-79 live performances and then 1986.
Really? I wonder what that played as here. I dont think “Im looking over old man Schneiders cow pasture...” would have helped it catch on. Now I wish I had an old recording so I could try to figure out in which city I was supposed to be.
Rudy Vallee's version of Honey is far superior to Bobby Goldsboro's. It's positive and uplifing.
Yes, and a very underrated guitarist. I always thought he was more talented that Michael Jackson. He mostly wrote his own songs, played many instruments (including virtuoso guitar) and even had his own unique moves according to the song. Other than Thriller, Jackson did the same moonwalk, grabbing crotch, up on his toes stuff. Jackson was talented, but Prince was a phenomenon. He had a lot more music him...what waste.
I'm a cat lover, so I like songs about cats.
Definite waste, and supreme talent. I remember loving When Doves Cry and Let’s Go Crazy when I was a kid.
He was Hendrix, Sly Stone, and George Clinton all rolled into one.
Lonnie Doneghan’s skiffle version of the Chewing Gum song was better:

He also wrote ‘a different drum’
Flip it over!
Train to Nowhere--The Champs (1958)
It’s funny how when you’re a kid, you aren’t fazed by celebrity at all. She didn’t tell us who her famous Grandpa was; he was just her grandpa. Mom found out from our neighbor. She was just a little girl who visited there sometimes. She was pure country innocence, and I was semi rural innocence. Life was so different back then. So different.
A few of my most annoying songs...
MacArthur Park-Richard Harris (This makes my flesh crawl)
Ode to Billie Joe-Bobbie Gentry (ugh!)
Honey-Bobby Goldsboro (already mentioned, but what a creepy song)
Any song by Yoko Ono (earplugs necessary)
Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde-Georgie Fame (lame fake 1920’s styled music)
Hey Jude-Beatles (boring boring boring)
So good to hear.
One of my best friends thinks it’s hilarious how much I hate them, because of my reaction. At first, I think she purposely put those songs on her playlist, because I hear them most often with her. She swears she didn’t do it, but if not her, then it was her husband. The funny thing is, we can be somewhere where she isn’t in charge of the music, like an outdoor show or a ball game. The J songs very often come on, way too often. At this point, if I can’t change the dial, I have to just laugh. Better than fuming or bitching about it. That doesn’t seem to work. I just wish they weren’t so popular.
Growing up they made me cringe.
Ear plugs are definitely necessary for any Yoko song. That’s noise, not music.
She swerved far left before the 2020 election. I’m pretty sure she was encouraging her little teeny boppers to get out and vote. She was pimping the far left causes pretty hard.
