US asked Hungary to invade Serbia – President Vucic - Viktor Orban refused Bill Clinton’s 1999 request to wage war on his neighbor

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic revealed on Saturday that American and British leaders, including President Bill Clinton, urged Hungary to invade Serbia by land in 1999. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who told Vucic of the request, refused.

In a televised address, Vucic said that the US and UK wanted Hungarian forces to push south into Serbia in order to split the Yugoslav military between the front in Kosovo and a new front with Hungary.

“Clinton and the British asked [Orban] to attack Serbia from the north so that they could extend our forces from Kosovo and Metohija to Vojvodina,” he explained. Orban, who at the time was one year into his first term in office, refused, and with the help of German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, pushed back against the “pressure from the White House.”

Orban told Vucic of the request during a recent meeting and allowed him to speak about it publicly, the Serbian leader said.

NATO launched a bombing campaign in 1999 against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which by that time was made up of just Serbia and Montenegro. In waging the air war, NATO sided with ethnic Albanian separatists, who were fighting with the Serbs for the independence of Kosovo, a province of Serbia.

Hungary had joined NATO earlier that year, but did not participate in the campaign.

According to Vucic, Orban then traveled to the UK for talks with Prime Minister Tony Blair and former PM Margaret Thatcher. Greeting him at the door of Downing Street, Thatcher told Orban “it bothers me a lot that you refused to attack Serbia, that's why more British soldiers will die,” Vucic said.

Ultimately, no British troops died during the campaign. Hostilities ceased in June 1999 with the signing of the Kumanovo Agreement, after which NATO troops moved into Kosovo, where they remain to this day. The bombing campaign marked the first time that the US-led alliance used military force without the approval of the UN Security Council, and is still regarded by much of the world as illegitimate.

I remember the media bullshyte about nasty Serbs and Milosevic was Hitler, etc... I honestly can't think of any strategic justifications discussed at the time.

Well if you don’t remember in earlier 1999 the United States was supposed to be the honest broker in Paris for negotiations between Kosovo and serbia. Eventually the talks in Paris broke down and United States the so-called honest broker decided to invade serbia.

Maybe the Russians could suggest Orban invade Ukraine from the west. Seems reasonable in light of the anti Serbian machinations of Bent Dick and his cronies

Clinton needed some distraction. Handing the very soul of Serbian civilisation over to muslims was no problem. The slavish media demonised the serbs. Deified the albanians. And hey presto. There are tards on FR who defend the action. And yet he we find the Russians taking the geopolitical big power hatchet to Ukraine to carve out space for Russians and it prompts gnashing of teeth and protestations about the sanctity of borders etc. But we see the U.S really cares for none of that pious pontificating. If it wants a chunk of your country to deflect from sleaze. Than look out. The sky is the limit

Serbia furious over latest anti-Russia sanctions

Brussels is only concerned with “revenge against free nations,” Serbian Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin said

The Serbian government has slammed the latest package of EU sanctions targeting Russia’s oil exports, describing it as the “first EU sanctions package” against Serbia.

Restrictions on the maritime

Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic was equally critical of the new sanctions, saying they were introduced “at the expense of the lives and living standards” of all Serbian people. “It will cost us hundreds of millions of euro,” Brnabic told Serbia’s Happy TV broadcaster.

“What they thought they would do to Russia they did to us on Wednesday, because we depend on the oil pipeline in Croatia,” the prime minister added, accusing Brussels of “using energy for political blackmail and retribution.”

On Thursday, the EU announced the eighth package of restrictions on Russia which include a price cap and “further restrictions” on the maritime transportation of Russian crude oil and petroleum products to third countries. Serbia imports Russian oil by sea through a Croatian port terminal on the island of Krk, from which it is then transported through a pipeline to Serbian territory.

The new measures would make such imports at least 20% more expensive, according to Serbian media. In June, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic warned that Serbia would not be able to import Russian oil after November 1 due to EU sanctions.

There wasn’t even a Declaration of War. Without that the Military overseas must be limited to just Marine guards/security at the consulates/embassies.

Serbians and a few other peoples, are unique in that they were able to withstand centuries of muslim domination without being islamised unlike the peoples of Iran, Syria, North Africa etc. In order to do that you have to have an idenity that was a serious counterweight to islam. I truly believe it is one reason the western elites despise serbs.

Just throwing it out there, but if the US didn't have such a large standing army, entire divisions of troops already stationed overseas, and dozens of defense contractors lobbying every member of congress for more war spending, it might be more difficult to get entangled in foreign incursions.

I’m sure that the fact that the United States has 750 United States military bases in 80 countries plays a pretty big role in why we are interfering everywhere.
