Study links omega-3s to improved brain structure, cognition at midlife

Eating cold-water fish and other sources of omega-3 fatty acids may preserve brain health and enhance cognition in middle age, new evidence indicates.

Having at least some omega-3s in red blood cells was associated with better brain structure and cognitive function among healthy study volunteers in their 40s and 50s.

"The new contribution here is that, even at younger ages, if you have a diet that includes some omega-3 fatty acids, you are already protecting your brain for most of the indicators of brain aging that we see at middle age," said Claudia Satizabal, Ph.D.

The study of 2,183 participants found that:

- Higher omega-3 index was associated with larger hippocampal volumes. - - The hippocampus, a structure in the brain, plays a major role in learning and memory. - Consuming more omega-3s was associated with better abstract reasoning, or the ability to understand complex concepts using logical thinking. - APOE4 carriers with a higher omega-3 index had less small-vessel disease. The APOE4 gene is associated with cardiovascular disease and vascular dementia.

Researchers used a technique called gas chromatography to measure docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) concentrations from red blood cells. The omega-3 index was calculated as DHA plus EPA.

The team divided participants into those who had very little omega-3 red blood cell concentration and those who had at least a little and more. "We saw the worst outcomes in the people who had the lowest consumption of omega-3s," Satizabal said. "So, that is something interesting. Although the more omega-3 the more benefits for the brain, you just need to eat some to see benefits."

It's encouraging that DHA and EPA also protected APOE4 carriers' brain health. "It's genetics, so you can't change it," Melo van Lent said, referring to the vulnerability of this risk group.

ConsumerLab tests for hazardous elements and overall quality status, including if the have the amounts of EPA and DHA they claim, and if they are rancid.

Oh, really? /s Lots of good it does since I found nary an article on the reviews. Like a paywall article, worthless.

If any smart-ass FReeper pays for access, post the top 5 here (they weren’t posted last night).

Otherwise, I’ve got harsh words, because I’ve been looking for years and NOTHING I’ve tried has performed, and I tried many which ranked high on public reports; O3 is that fragile.

;-)

That no one rose to the challenge to post a single summary of laboratory testing on any ‘product’ whatsoever is rather telling.

(I’m doing 2/week, low & slow, Atlantic exclusively)

Antarctic krill oil is marketed as demonstrating a greater ease of absorption due to higher phospholipid content, as being sourced through sustainable fisheries and being free of toxins and pollutants; however, limited data is available on the latter component.

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP) encompass a range of toxic, man-made contaminants that accumulate preferentially in marine ecosystems and in the lipid reserves of organisms.

Extraction and concentration of fish oils therefore represents an inherent nutritional-toxicological conflict.

A Nutritional-Toxicological Assessment of Antarctic Krill Oil versus Fish Oil Dietary Supplements

Though this study is somewhat illuminating, it is proven worthless by the authors in failing to identify extraction methods and consequent toxicology of product, with their only claims of toxicology being of 'persistent organic pollutants' (POPs) and a narrow range of analysis. nutritional-toxicological conflict

Indeed, and my rationale for avoiding any Pacific seafood from now until I achieve room temperature. The same applies to ingested toxicology from unregulated supplements.

They also write:

Ongoing monitoring of the pollutant content of fish and krill oil products will become increasingly important as food authorities seek regulatory overview of this rapidly expanding industry.

Riiiiiiight. I don't expect regulation of supplements to occur in my lifetime. Hell, they aren't even checking Pacific seafood for radionuclides.

I advise extreme caution on all the hype and a return to real food.
