Buttigieg: Electric Vehicles Could Be 'Very Useful' During a Power Outage
Cybercast News Service ^ | October 5, 2022 | 5:47am EDT | Susan Jones

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was ready with his answer when Fox News’s Neil Cavuto asked him about the widespread, hurricane-related power outages in southwest Florida.

“Do you think this reminds folks that we’re not ready, or the EVs are not ready for prime time?” Cavuto asked Buttigieg.

“Well, I actually think this is a great example of one of the many benefits of those tools,” Buttigieg said: “I was just at the Detroit Auto Show a couple of weeks ago. And one of the things that was very impressive about some of the vehicles that we saw, including the — for example, the pickup trucks that are on the market, entering onto the market right now, is that their power can actually flow both ways. So, in an extreme event, from a neighborhood resiliency perspective, they can actually work basically like a generator, except that you don’t have to have diesel ready for them. What they’re doing is, they’re using the battery capacity to power a home and, in that sense, could be very useful in a scenario like this.”

(Left unasked and unanswered was the question, how do you recharge your EV once the car battery runs down powering the house? Gas cans are portable; electric charging stations are not.)

Buttigieg said no one envisions an “overnight” transition to electric vehicles. …

In the event of an EMP strike on the US mainland we will already be in WWIII and we likely will have a few other problems as well.

Is Butt-boy serious? Okay, I guess for the first few miles and even then, only if already charged. Otherwise they’ll make great lawn ornaments or boat anchors.

I used to have a motor home equipped with a gasoline-powered generator. There were a couple of occasions where I fired that up and used it to power a few appliances in my home during extended power outages. But I’m sure you’d agree that’s not a reason to a motor home. Do us a favor and stop making absurd arguments, Mr. Secretary.

Yep
But this crowd is trying to leap frog over all that.

In the case of the buttboy wonder..it’s probably a case of to much deep wrong hole penetration. Along with public mis-education.

Parroting quack science/research.

EV pickup trucks that can't tow for any real distance.

What happens in extreme situations like FL right now? People have immediate needs... generators and other power sources come in handy. As the situation persists, they often need to relocate while recovery of the area continues. If you’ve used all of your juice running your fridge, good luck relocating.

You need Faraday shielding capability to protect against EMP.

Not necessarily as a precursor to a nuclear strike as EMP can be used in Asymmetric operations which are limited. Could be done in retaliation for the pipeline getting destroyed.

In that case, nothing will work except your feet.

But using an EV for back up power for a home is a good solution for a couple hours. But how many morons will try to ply in their home…and run a cord back to their car to charge it?

I have plugs in my truck that can recharge phones and computers. Not sure I could run a refrigerator with it.

Everything is going to be useless during a power outage. EV’s won’t charge, but pumps won’t pump either.

Overall, we need more nuclear, places like CA could easily tap into more ocean generated power (because the Pacific is a little wilder and more powerful than the Atlantic), etc.

The problem is that we have a ruling class that wants to shut down life for all the rest of us plebes.

Yep, and the only vulnerable electronics in my ‘37 Chev pickup (besides the stereo) is the regulator circuit for my alternator. Fortunately I have spare parts in a Faraday cage storage container.
