Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was ready with his answer when Fox News’s Neil Cavuto asked him about the widespread, hurricane-related power outages in southwest Florida.
“Do you think this reminds folks that we’re not ready, or the EVs are not ready for prime time?” Cavuto asked Buttigieg.
“Well, I actually think this is a great example of one of the many benefits of those tools,” Buttigieg said: “I was just at the Detroit Auto Show a couple of weeks ago. And one of the things that was very impressive about some of the vehicles that we saw, including the — for example, the pickup trucks that are on the market, entering onto the market right now, is that their power can actually flow both ways. So, in an extreme event, from a neighborhood resiliency perspective, they can actually work basically like a generator, except that you don’t have to have diesel ready for them. What they’re doing is, they’re using the battery capacity to power a home and, in that sense, could be very useful in a scenario like this.”
(Left unasked and unanswered was the question, how do you recharge your EV once the car battery runs down powering the house? Gas cans are portable; electric charging stations are not.)
Buttigieg said no one envisions an “overnight” transition to electric vehicles. …

From the idiot “ they’re using the battery capacity to power a home”
*IF* the EV is charged enough, ANDIF they have a utility-approved disconnect switch for the home; not cheap. That’s money above and beyond getting the 40-60 AMP Class 2 charger installed.
As an eyes-wide-open EV owner *AND* residential solar owner, I am fully aware of what it takes and all the shortcomings.
For example our systems have both an ‘automated’ disconnect capability built in, AND we also were required to have an absolute disconnect from the grid via a blade switch on the side of the house next to the meter.
WE endured all this because I am a nerd AND we live in the country AND we want to be able to have options. AND we have dual-fuel generation capacity and gasoline powered vehicles in addition to the EV. In the event of an extended power failure, especially for weather, the ONLY vehicle in operation will be the F-150 4X4 with extended-range fuel tanks and spare gas in safe on-site storage.

You CAN recharge with the right GAS/PROPANE powered generator. The right generator will operate a level 2 charger and fill up your fully-discharged Electric F-150 in about 20-24 hours ;-).
Or you could just use the generator to power essential circuits in the home ...
He never had a battery operated toy. Perhaps the battery operated dildo he uses with his “spouse”?
Why not have the technology ready and in place ..before destroying gas and oil?
Sometime in the year 2335?
And then it could be a smooth transition
Oh right.. we’re pretending the planet.

Kinda like the pushing of covid, eh?
The stupid, it burns.
🔥 Just don’t park in the garage.
Not necessarily. EMP is overrated because there are simple ways of protecting against it. Those "ways" are in use.
The biggest problem with the notion that the EV will come to the rescue during a power outage aught to be obvious.
I get your point.
I was wondering myself if Mr. Buttiegieg had ever got past 5th grade in school. If you go all-electric, then at some point you must have a large amount of electricity whether for a home or a vehicle. If the sun isn’t out & the wind is calm then you are screwed. Keep in mind that’s only ONE of the the problems if you are depending on “green” energy. More problems are popping up all the time particularly with EVs for those who are paying attention. This article should have been titled “Electric Vehicles Could Be Very Useless During a Power Outage”. Looking at all the presidents picks as department heads, I think they must have nearly all graduated from the same 4th grade class.
No gas/oil, no EVs. That’s the part they leave out.
The “transition” from steam cars (and even first-generation EVs like the Baker and others) to gasoline was “smooth” because of private sector innovations, particularly the electric starter motor.
If you like your plan you can keep your plan. Benghazi was caused by a YouTube video mocking mohammed. Those are two more leftist lies.
No, not the more mechanical ones.
If you’re lucky enough to have a steam car (but we ain’t all Jay Leno), that would still run.
Profoundly dumb on so many levels.
“It’s like they are forced to keep pushing all of these Green new Deal ideas no matter how stupid, how useless, how unrealistic any of them are.”
There’s a relevant idea in poker, called “pot committed”. It’s when you have already bet enough money on a hand that you are invested in it and can’t afford to fold even if you think you are going to lose. You’ve got to hold on for that one slim chance of winning, because that’s the only hope you have of getting any of your chips back.
That’s where the left are right now with “climate change”.
It’s not a generator at all. An electric vehicle sitting outside your house doesn’t convert any mechanical energy into electrical power. It’s just a battery with a limited capacity.
