OAKLAND, Calif. - A man was shot and killed early Tuesday while confronting catalytic-converter thieves outside his home in Oakland's Glenview neighborhood.
Family members identified the victim as Arturo Coronado, 60.
"You already had the catalytic converter. Why did you shoot my dad?" asked Coronado's daughter Amalya Love through tears.
The shooting happened at about 4 a.m. near Everett Avenue and Hampel Street in the normally quiet neighborhood off Park Boulevard.
"I heard some grinding, like metal on metal," said neighbor Michael Cusick.
The thieves had cut off one of two catalytic converters on Coronado's Toyota Sequoia.
Coronado kept saying, "Hey! Hey!" Cusick said. "I heard the pop and then about two seconds later, they sped off."

I disagree. This guy was very much in the wrong and clearly committed a hate crime when he attacked some individuals just trying to establish some racial equity and get a rung up on the wealth ladder to success.
Well I hold that Putin is a thug, and Zelensky obviously loves our democracy so much that he is willing to sacrifice boodles of our foreign aid and send it to folks in DC to show them how much he loves our democratic values.
So don't ever call me a Putinista. I won't have it. Our perversion and corruption is no concern of his and if so bribes in the right place help Zelensky get the support he needs to build democracy in Ukraine, well, whatever works.
This is supposed to be America, not some third world sh!thole. This is what MAGA is all about. All day...
Car owners, if they have a police report, need to have their catalytic converter requirement removed if their state has smog tests. The state cannot force someone to have what has become a legal "attractive nuisance".
Catalytic converter thieves need to be charged with environmental crimes. In addition to prison, fine them at levels that match fines for polluting companies. If smog is so dangerous that car owners must have a catalytic converter, stealing one must be punished to match.
Are you always like this....?????
Do you not get it?
“. I can’t count how many houses I see with garages full of crap piled to the ceiling and their cars parked out on the streets “
Hey, I resemble that remark!
At least there’s room enough in the garage for my wife to park. But I plead guilty to having my car on the street. I try to leave no valuable in it, and we’re in a quiet neighborhood … but things are starting to get sketchy in some nearby areas, so I should probably to your advice to heart.
Not complete instructions
Get a shotgun
Fire a couple times
THROUGH THE DOOR
Never get between a Junkie and their fix.
Oakland is a quagmire, we should retreat and give it to the natives.
Oakland has been a ‘Rat Urban Utopia for decades.
What did VP Camel-la ever do to support MAGA inclined citizens of Oakland while she was large and in-charge in Calif.?
You’ve been around here since 2000 and you have to ask THAT question?
smh
Yeah,,sometimes.
The victim’s daughter said her father had stopped other thieves in the past from stealing his tools.
“Usually he’ll tell them to stop. This time, they shot him,” she said.
Cusick said, ‘I think that was probably more instinct. He probably didn’t realize the gravity of what they could potentially do to him.”
DUH.
This sucks. I hate thieves. It is chicken crap enough to flat out steal, but to kill a man? God bless!
Yep
It is SO sad, isn’t it?
Not everyone has a garage. I don’t. Tree sap anyone?
Breaks My heart.
Well, at least in Texas you can legally use force to protect property...
