I believe the word opium is derived from the Turkish ‘afium.’ The poppy’s medicinal properties were known for centuries before the creation of the liquid opium narcotic.

Makes sense that it would be seen as an offering for the dead, considering too much can kill you and the coma-like effect it can have in high doses, but its medicinal purposes were clearly discovered early. Didn’t know it was that early, though. Wow.
