California is phasing out new natural gas furnaces and heaters by 2030 This means all new homes and buildings will be constructed with electrical services The ban aims to cut ozone released from the state, which has the highest levels in the US

California is set to phase out new natural gas furnaces and heaters by 2030 after a proposal from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) was passed, making it the first US state to take such action.

The proposal, included in the 2022 State Implementation Plan (SIP) Strategy, is to combat nitrogen oxide pollution in the state - homes and buildings generate four times more ozone than all of California's gas power plants combined.

The plan, however, will cost about $96.2 billion to enforce and new homeowners will have to pay for expensive electrical options moving forward.

The report comes just a month after California announced a ban on the sale of new gas-powered cars.

CARB Chair Liane Randolph said in a statement: 'While this strategy will clean the air for all Californians, it will also lead to reduced emissions in the many low-income and disadvantaged communities that experience greater levels of persistent air pollution.

'But to truly meet the ozone standard, California needs more federal action to clean up harmful diesel pollution from primarily federally controlled sources, from locomotives and ocean-going vessels to aircraft, which are all concentrated in communities that continue to bear the brunt of poor air quality.

'We simply cannot provide clean air to Californians without the federal government doing its part.'

The new ban is part of California Govern Gavin Newson's climate push and aims to abide by the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) regulations to limit ozone in the atmosphere to 70 parts per billion

BTW: I am not supporting the “Commifornia” heater regulations...just pointing out the underlying chemistry. :-)

short of bringing out the brush, twice is almost mandatory and three and four are not unheard of. Now Govt. wants to tell you what to drive that will leave you with empty pockets and freezing on the side of the road in winter.

So they want everything electric? They are short on that now it looks like, so where does the extra electricity come from?
All the thinkers must have left the state by now.

California will collapse before then

They’ve reached, and passed, peak stupidity.

The world isn’t going to put up with their bullshyte any longer.

Trees also produce ozone, so if they have an ozone problem they should cut down all their trees.

California Air Resources Board member are unelected by the people. They should not be able to order anything.

If there’s no sales of new gas furnaces, it looks like the homeowner will have to do the expensive electric retrofit and upgrade.

Why wait until 2030. Why not do it now?

"Electicity so much more expensive than natural gas!"

The poor will get government checks.

“It is ground level ozone (O3)...has been a problem for 40-50 years on hot days. Today’s forecast for the area of FR HQ (Fresno) was 78 ppb (Stage 3 of 6) actually topped out at 86 ppb today.”

What kind of O3 levels do you find in cities in other states? Houston. Las Vegas. Phoenix? Atlanta Georgia? Those states are not banning natural gas use in homes.

California is usually the leader in air quality regs (state by state wise). Caused by bad air “state ranking” in the past:
https://www.calstate.edu/csu-system/news/Pages/California-Named-State-with-the-Worst-Air-Quality-Again.aspx

Whether Texas or AZ will follow the lead of CA, who knows? There are 14 states that do follow CA closely in vehicle air pollution regs:

https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/sites/default/files/2022-05/§177_states_05132022_NADA_sales_r2_ac.pdf

Whether they follow on CA nat. gas appliance regs. remains to be seen.

Say what you will, but Houston has similar ground ozone levels to Los Angeles. I see no Jihad in Houston against gas appliances installations at home. Water heaters, stoves etc.

The reason is that Texas/Houston says, we can live with this ozone level rather than bankrupt ourselves via no new natural gas installations.

Let's see if CA can quantify the reduction in ozone levels, if any, that this measure supposedly will achieve. Oh, that's right: Virtue signaling isn't about the results.
