The hidden truths about your electric car
American Thinker ^ | 09/25/2022

What are the implications of purchasing an electric vehicle (E.V.)? Let's find out.

A new full-size E.V. capable of traveling about 300 miles with a single charge currently sells for about $60,000. Typical E.V. battery replacement after 3–5 years of normal use sells for $10,000–$15,000. This type lithium battery replacement is handled only by an authorized dealership. On the other hand, a new full-size gas vehicle (G.V.) sells for approximately $40,000. Typical battery replacement for the same normal use sells for $100–$150 and can be replaced and installed by the individual owner.

Let's consider the cost of ownership of driving a vehicle 100,000 miles. For the E.V., an 8-hour charge, which is good for a range of about 300 miles, is now about $8 per charge, or about $2,700. The E.V. cost includes a $60,000 initial cost plus the $2,700 charging cost and a $10,000 battery, totaling $72,700. For the G.V., the cost includes $40,000 initial cost plus $300 battery (2) replacements and 4,000 gallons of gasoline, averaging 25 miles per gallon at current gas price of $3.50 per gallon, or $14,000, and $2,000 maintenance, which totals $56,300.

It follows that the price for gasoline would have to be about $7.60 per gallon for ownership cost of the E.V. to be equivalent to that of a traditional G.V. These numbers are part of the hidden truths.

A typical E.V. battery weighs one thousand pounds and is about the size of a car trunk. It contains 25 pounds of lithium; 60 pounds of nickel; 44 pounds of manganese; 30 pounds of cobalt; 200 pounds of copper; and 400 pounds of aluminum, steel, and plastic. This type of battery contains over 6,000 individual lithium-ion cells. The majority of these materials are derived from mining operations worldwide.

and electricity prices are going up as they shift to “green” energy

pushing EVs before a grid upgrade sounded like putting the cart before the horse

you are not cutting emissions if your electricity comes from conventional fuels

“green energy” will be so expensive only the rich and powerful will be able to afford personal transportation

the masses will have to use bus bike walk

so the quiet part is that there is no need to upgrade the capacity of the grid

the shift to “green energy” and EVs is not about banning gas cars it is about forcing everyone onto public transportation

how much solar charging capability does it have?

my understanding is that solar could not add much

are you plugging into solar at home?

RE: The first five paragraphs must have been written by a 12 year old at best. A silly, facile comparison

Can you elaborate more? I think it is essential to compare EVs with gas powered cars to get an indication of how much it will cost the car owner.

I’d really be pleasantly surprised if your average 12 year old could write like that.

LOL, the state fee for “one” battery (not 6000)

I have a BMWi3, and I think its listed as a gasoline powered vehicle. It has the gas powered generator that feeds the battery.

I put about two gallons in the two gallon tank every six months. I charge every night for a 150 mile range in the morning.

So these hybrids, they will be worth more if they elude taxes.

“Steel and aluminum must be melted down and reformulated to be used in other products. No mining involved, but pollution guaranteed from the smelting and remanufacturing process.”

Obviously, but there is a huge difference in impacts.

Aptera... first look, shocking. But after seeing it for a minute, I like it.

Very futuristic look. Like a bird without wings, a fish with wheels.

Did you test drive one?

Only $30,000 to replace a battery? This is right out of leftist lunacy land.

My wife and I were joined on our morning walk by our neighbor, who knows every thing re everyone on our culdesac.

My wife and I noticed what appeared to be recent/new solar panels on one of the neighbor’s home.

Our fellow walker told us that it was new EV solar panels for 2 new EV chargers.

I remarked that the couple, who owned the house were Subaru liberals with a single 10 year old Subaru in their driveway.

Our walker said that the adult children owned EV’s and said that was too much hassle for their 2-300 mile one way trip to visit the grandparents, the owners of the Subaru.

So grampa and gramma bought/had installed the solar panels and dual outdoor chargers for the visiting EV vehicles and grandkids.

Our guide said so far everyone seemed happy.

To compare the operating cost of an IC to an EV using only the cost of a battery to start the car for the operating cost is horribly incomplete and dishonest. The starter battery in an IC is just a fraction of the opex of the vehicle.

I do not favor the EV but if there is to be a comparison it needs to be complete and honest. Superficial comparisons as this one don’t help the argument one bit. The author should leave the first five paragraphs alone and stick with the latter on resource base for the EV, something he may have some credibility about.

That the argument posed in the first five paragraphs is facile should be obvious to just about anyone with even a basic understanding of vehicles. The understanding presented is not even at a basic level.
