Diabetes and oral diseases affect each other and hinder treatment
Medical Xpress / University of Helsinki / Frontiers in Oral Health ^ | Sept. 21, 2022 | Pia Heikkilä et al

Research shows that common chronic diseases and problems associated with oral health have a detrimental and long-term reciprocal effect on each other.

The predictive value of oral health for the onset of various chronic diseases was investigated through a 10-year follow-up. A key finding was that periodontitis (a disease of the connective tissue of teeth) has a particular link with diabetes.

"We know from prior studies that periodontitis has a connection to many chronic diseases. Thanks to our exceptionally long-term dataset, we were able to analyze causalities and bidirectional effects between these factors," says Pia Heikkilä.

The results of the study show that periodontitis, a common disease of public health importance in Finland, and apical periodontitis, inflammation of the apex of the tooth root, are associated with common metabolic diseases, such as metabolic syndrome, type 1 and 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes, which require treatment.

No similar association with other common chronic diseases, such as connective tissue diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory intestinal diseases or serious mental diseases, was observed in the study.

Based on the findings, a two-way effect exists between diabetes and other metabolic diseases, and periodontitis. Diabetes accelerates the progression of periodontitis and complicates its diagnosis and treatment, especially if diabetes has not been diagnosed or the disease is poorly controlled.

Correspondingly, incipient or latent periodontitis makes diabetes chronic as well as hinders its diagnosis, control and maintenance therapy.

The mutual effect of these diseases also results in increased costs, significant both in terms of public health and the economy.

"Based on our findings, successful treatment of periodontitis has a positive effect on the treatment outcomes for diabetes and reduces the cost of care. Similarly, the successful treatment of diabetes slows down the progression of periodontitis while reducing medical costs," Professor Timo Sorsa notes.

It is interesting that periodontitis is not associated with rheumatoid arthritis, IBD, or mental disease.

I bet it is, they just haven't noticed it yet.

Periodontitis is linked to heart disease and inflammation. Inflamation and circulatory problems can probably be linked to all kinds of stuff.

The company Viome has a oral kit out along with the rest of their testing protocol. And they’re supposed to tell you what’s going on in your mouth in the way of cancers and other problems. I ordered the kit and I plan to take it in 2 1/2 months. My problem is that I started a penicillin protocol and you have to wait 2 1/2 months before he can take a test. But I’m interested to see how my mouth rates because I have had periodontal problems for the last 40 years.

That looks interesting. But at $350 for the oral+gut+cancer I’ll hold off on that one

I had a root canal go bad that ate away a good portion of bone in my upper jaw. Caught it last year. They said it would grow back. Next time they x-ray I’m going to ask them to be sure and shoot that area.

My gum disease went away after I went low carb. I’ve been carnivore the last four years, no more loose teeth or bleeding gums.

Fascinating. I have heard of a couple other people who had similar results, and now it makes more sense to me.

How long after going lo carb/carnivore did it take to notice gum changes?

I didn’t notice it until Jordan Petersen said his gum disease went away. Might have been the first six months.

I was keto for four months before going carnivore. Counting carbs and managing the vegetables got to be a pain in the butt. Then I started seeing people talking about all meat. Seemed extreme but I tried it and like it.
