Germany is nationalizing Uniper, its biggest importer of natural gas, as part of an €8 billion ($7.9 billion) plan to prevent an energy shortage this winter.
Europe has been hit by soaring natural gas and electricity prices as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and its throttling of gas supplies.
The German government will hold around 99% of Uniper after injecting new capital and buying out its Finnish parent company Fortum (FOJCF), German Economy Minister Robert Habeck told journalists in Berlin on Wednesday. Uniper provides 40% of the country's gas supply and is crucial for large companies and private consumers in Europe's biggest economy.
In July, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced the government would step in to bail out Uniper with a package worth up to €15 billion ($15.3 billion), after it was brought to its knees by months of Russian supply cuts and soaring spot market prices.

A gas shortage is now guaranteed.
That’ll fix ‘er!
Putting government bureaucrats in charge always helps a business prosper!

What could go wrong?
for the collectivist
hey bonus!
Well why not. People right here in the good ole USA, particularly in the RAT party, have been speaking of the same.
This should stop them from freezing
or is this all part of the plan, Green Leap Forward?
now the state gets to tell you how much energy you can use
I will just say what German journalists have refused to discuss...Uniper got into trouble because their import cost changed, and the contracts with customers were locked in...so they didn’t react in time to slip the upgraded cost to customers in early-summer.
Crappy management style is the basic problem. Getting the government into the middle of this? It’ll only intensify poor management decisions.
Something’s wrong with those Aryans. They can’t get over the fact that they started 2 big wars and lost both.
The philosophy of the "greens" is best summed up by a quote I heard on NPR, between a "science" host and a "climate" guest:
"We have to destroy the economy to save the planet."
Since humans are just parasites on Goddess Gaia, they are just collateral damage in the cause.
Everyone knows that governments can run things much better than private companies can. So this is bound to work out well.
However, my Magic Eight Ball disagrees. Time will tell who’s right.
I would be more scared of having energy production in the hands of the government than a private company.
Never let a good crisis go to waste, eh Wilhelm???
Was this the huge event they promised for 9/24?
Same thing will be happening here (that hasn’t already)....taking over ALL means of production (starting with media and fossil fuel), to establish that New World Order/Global Government.
Well there’s always the Ploesti oil fields.
How brilliant!
Put the people who caused the coming disaster in power to prevent the coming disaster.
That should really work.
