Can the GOP Accommodate Two Rock Stars?
American Thinker ^ | 22 Sep, 2022 | Jack Cashill

Before Donald Trump descended the golden escalator at Trump tower in June 2015, the GOP had gone more than a quarter-century without a rock star. Now, it has two, and that is the challenge.

Fresh from his deft Martha’s Vineyard gambit, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis flew into Kansas on Sunday to rally support for Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt, now running for governor against incumbent Democrat Laura Kelly.

Saul Alinsky, the acknowledged master of forcing poseurs to honor their own policies, could not have done better than DeSantis. No political stroke in memory has succeeded in exposing liberal hypocrisy quite so effortlessly and effectively. Had the Islanders taken the 50 illegal aliens in, they might have checked DeSantis’s move and saved a little face, but they didn’t. They lived up to their most ludicrous stereotypes, calling in the National Guard and deporting the hapless Venezuelans to some sterile Army base on the mainland. It will be years before “Martha’s Vineyard” is anything but a template for a meme or a punch line to a joke.

Both Schmidt and U.S. Senator Roger Marshall had fun with Martha’s Vineyard in the speeches they gave preceding DeSantis’s. The SRO crowd at the Olathe (O-lay-the) Civics Center ate it up. When DeSantis took center stage, the thousands in attendance were primed. They surged to their feet and roared their appreciation. If it wasn’t clear before this past week, it was clear to everyone in Olathe. Ron DeSantis has arrived.

SNIP

That said, he did not mention Trump in his speech. Schmidt has also been tagged as something of a moderate, but one would not have guessed that from his intense and impressively disciplined speech. He did not mention Trump either.

The idea that Trump was the one who mandated the shot is false.

He always made it a choice. Always was against it as a mandate.

It also has nothing to do with J6, which again was not his doing.

Blaming him for those two things, and conflating them seems a bit odd.

Why anyone considering themselve conservative would do that is beyond me.

Rock star or not I believe that Trump is history as far as
being a candidate again. His support will be very helpful
to a candidate that he may choose to support. JMO

The GOP can tolerate a stage full of rock stars. Finding them is the difficult part. Most GOP pols get usurped by the Deep State and behave like neutered puppies when the Dems go on the attack.

More people like Kari Lake, Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump PLEASE!!!! THAT is what America needs right now!

Desantis better be careful. Fighters win, not by being careful, but by taking risks.

Or what? You're going to stomp your feet?

He is pissing a lot of us off.

No he isn't. You have a right to live in a world of fantasy, but nobody in the real world cares.

election fraud deniers and crazies like you.

Straight up slander on your part. I have always maintained that the election was stolen. A casual perusal of my posting history will bear this out. Again, you live in a fantasy world. Me? I will happily pull the lever for Trump or DeSantis - whomever of these two wins the primary for 2024.

Because maybe I was given very short notice that I had to take the shot or lose my six figure job. Then immediately afterward stared suffering from bloating and was diagnosed with a heart condition, despite originally being in perfect health and coming from a family of five star athletes.

I know you’ll say Trump didn’t force the mandates, but he rushed the vaccines out, and has repeatedly called them ‘“one of the greatest inventions of all mankind” which is not only ludicrous, but asinine. Now I know you’ll say Fauci is the one who rushed the vaccines, which is wrong, as Trump is in record saying Fauci told him they shouldn’t be rushed and should take years to develop. I’m sure you either stopped reading or are in denial at this point, but I have the links if you can’t find the truth on your own.

Does that erase all the good Trump did, no, but I don’t want anyone near the white house who can’t see all the horrible damage those vaccines caused, and might be in favor of the next concoction they have brewed up for us.

If you actully think the electiuon was stolen then you should be 1,000,000% behind Trump re-election. There is no other recourse. F Desantis, he can wait.

Sure. If he wins the primary.

That was Biden's fault. Sorry you got caught by the Biden mandate (yes, it was the BIDEN MANDATE), but being angry at Trump is silly and wrong.

Conflating J6 with Biden's vaccine mandates, seeing both as Trump's fault, rather than the Biden leftism gone amok borders on insanity.

I have already committed to casting a vote for Donald Trump in 2024. I'll write him in on my ballot if he's not the GOP nominee.

The last thing this country needs in the White House is another Ivy League lawyer who has never worked outside government. In fact, I'd go so far as to say I think lawyers should be disqualified from holding public office.

A primary with Desantis v Trump will be the end of the Republican party. Desantis better not even THINK about running against Trump in ‘24. Kooks like you need your head examined. I hope that kooks like you do not influence the young Gov. Desantis.

Trump supports the shots, very strongly, which have maimed and killed countless people across the world.

If that’s not an issue for you, fine. It is for me, and many others, whether you are smart enough to understand it, or not.

The question isn’t whether Trump is better than Biden, so it’s you who is obviously having trouble conflating subjects. It’s whether he’s better than DeSantis, or others that will be running for President as Republicans. And your comment that Trump had nothing to do with J6 at all is the most insane thing on this thread, since you were the one first using that word.

Dude, your courage stopped at your paycheck. Nothing you say beyond that admission matters.

I think Rand Paul has been the most outspoken on issues that matter, and has shown he has the backbone to take on the challenge. I think Abbot is one to keep an eye on as well. Like DeSantis, these people have shown they are not afraid of the press, and are more about action than words.

Or? You'll have another stompy foot tantrum?

Kooks like you need your head examined.

Thanks. Coming from someone like you, so credible and all, that's, well, a string of words you managed to type, so congratulations.

Nope there are many more than two, let's add Kari Lake and so many others. The whole article is based on a faulty premise. The GOP can use hundreds of rock stars. The issue is the current GOP party is molded as assistant Democrats, certainly not rock star material.

Silly, childish idealism. Blind to real life and it’s challenges. A dreamer, captivated by Trump’s words, but blind to his actions.

But does he want the job?

Because more and more that is the most important criteria, to be willing to put up with the arrows that come with the job. And most in DC just want to have a cushy gig with all the perks, and none of the responsibility. They don’t want to be “in the arena”.
