It takes months to make a chip. You take a 2 foot disk of Silicon and make hundreds of copies on it. You apply a substance , shine some light that has a pattern blocking some of it, then wash away the exposed material that was altered by the light. Since ordinary light does not have a wavelegth short enough for the current patterns they use extreme ultraviolet now. You keep adding layers this way until it’s almost like a miniature city.

Good explanation .... I never knew it took months to make a computer CPU chip. Intel current i5 perhaps? Lesser chips, such as a phone are full of, must take days or a week. That short time.

As much as Biden is useless, at least the DC parasites voted in subsidies to build more chip plants/fabs here. TSMC, Intel

450mm is the largest wafer diameter (~18 inches) out there, but most Fabs
are still doing 12 inch...most of the stuff I work on is still on 8 inch wafers.
