Helicopter parents in youth sports may increase kids’ stress levels: psychologists

Many American kids are participating in multiple team sports today. Yet they’re not only navigating packed daily schedules, they’re dealing with high stress levels.

While participation in team sports has been associated with better mental health in children, parents must take care to avoid becoming critical or over-involved in their children’s sports experience, according to findings from the University of Italy published last year in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

“Our findings suggest that excessive parental involvement can cause pressure on children who would prefer parental participation characterized by praise and understanding,” the study indicated.

I observe a lot of my grandchildren’s games.
Many of these parents (football especially) are trying to re-live or augment their youthful memories via their kids games.

Too bad kids don’t play pickup sports. When I was a kid that was typical nearly everyday if not playing organized sports, which were seasonal, not year round.

When parent(s) only have 1 or 2 children and are spending less time at work and more time at leisure than ever before, and have less spiritual satisfaction, and are raised in high protection culture, then the parents can become unduly focused on the activities of kids in unhealthy ways.

When everything kids do is organized and provided by adults all the joy is gone.

I’d hate to be a kid today. I used to disappear into the woods with a BB gun in the morning and unless I took a break for lunch, reappear for dinner.

I remember getting in trouble for missing half a day of school because a few of us found a huge bunch of crawdads in a creek near the school during lunch time and cooking them in an abandoned hub cap.

They instead want to control, indoctrinate them.
