Long-Range HIMARS Missiles Not Needed in Ukraine Yet: Pentagon
Newsweek ^ | 25 Aug, 2022 | EWAN PALMER

The U.S. will not be providing Ukraine with long-range missiles amid Russia's invasion, with the Pentagon believing the precision-guided missile systems already provided are "the most relevant munitions for the current fight."

Speaking to reporters Wednesday after President Joe Biden announced an additional $3 billion in military aid to Ukraine, Defense Under Secretary Colin Kahl said long-range Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) munitions, which are capable of hitting targets at a distance of more than 280 kilometers, are not currently needed.

Since June, the U.S. has provided 16 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), which have played a vital part in Ukraine's ability to fight off the Russian invasion. Currently, Ukraine fires Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (GMLRS) from HIMARS, which have successfully targeted key Russian military targets such as command posts and ammunition depots.

Ukraine has also called for further support by way of potentially hundreds more HIMARS systems, which can also be used to fire ATACMS munitions, that the U.S. has so far not agreed to.

Kahl said during Wednesday's press conference that the GMLRS provided by the U.S., which have a range of around 70 to 80 kilometers, are still the best form of attack for Ukraine, rather than the longer-ranged ATACMS.

You haven’t given a source for your claim, and that link you posted didn’t say that NATO is in LVIV or in Ukraine, it was an old story about a missile attack on a Ukrainian base.

Again with the obtuseness.

One link said that NATO left Kiev in February and moved to Lvov and Brussels.

It's tough arguing with old guys.

The obvious problem with all that is that there was never any chance of Ukraine joining NATO, if Putin even halfway behaved himself. Putin damn well knew it.

He's just being obtuse.

Some people get off on slicing the argument fine.

My Democrat neighbor is like that.

Love the guy - but he would argue this point too, in just the same way.

There is nothing of an argument or slicing or anything in asking a poster for his source for a radical claim.

We have to be able to see, read, and know the source ourselves to verify your claim, that is common practice in all discussions and especially here at FR.

Another way to look at it is that our Pentagon (or Administration?) blinked and Russia correctly perceives this as weakness — and decided to proceed with hitting a dam in Ukraine, with a town immediately downstream. In fact, reports say it’s been hit again, to increase the rate of flooding. Pretty clear Geneva violation.

Oh, that “town” downstream is Kryvyi Rih, the largest city in central Ukraine, est. pop. 646,748. “Happens to be” Pres. Zelenskiy’s home city,
