I'm re-reading a book that I read 56 years ago as a school assignment...”To Kill A Mockingbird”. I've seen the film a half dozen times but the book is even better.

An old habit from school days in the 1960’s working on reading several books at the same time.

“Patriarcha” by Robert Filmer: about the divine right to rule unquestionly of Kings.

“Discourses Concerning Government” By Algernon Sidney: about the rights of the people to rule themselves even over Kings. (King Charles II had him executed)

“Indian Depredations In Texas” by J.W. Wilbarger: eyewitness accounts of fighting on the frontier.

“Crockett’s Coin” by Mike Jordan: a coming of age novel geared for teenagers.

“Battles And Leaders Of The Civil War” by Ned Bradford: a 1 volume abridgement of the original 3 volumes printed in the 1880’s; eyewitness accounts of the Civil War.

And the KJV Bible again: working through 1 Kings now; Words have meanings and sometimes many meanings our times aren’t so different from those of the backsliding Kings.

Just finished reading a new biography of James Madison by Jay Cost. Highly recommended, as is his previous book, “The Price of Greatness” about the relationship between Madison and Hamilton.

"Jack Hinson's One-Man War: A Civil War Sniper," by Tom C. McKenney.

A quiet, wealthy, plantation owner, Jack Hinson watched the start of the Civil War with disinterest. Opposed to secession and a friend to Union and Confederate commanders alike, he did not want a war. After Union soldiers seized and murdered his sons, placing their decapitated heads on the gateposts of his estate, Hinson could remain indifferent no longer. He commissioned a special rifle for long-range accuracy, he took to the woods, and he set out for revenge. This remarkable biography presents the story of Jack Hinson, a lone Confederate sniper who, at the age of 57, waged a personal war on Grant's army and navy. The result of 15 years of scholarship, this meticulously researched work is the only account of Hinson's life ever recorded and involves an unbelievable cast of characters, including the Earp brothers, Jesse James, and Nathan Bedford Forrest.

A Novel By James A. Michener

one of my favorite authors. I met him once when he came to speak to our High School Quill and Scroll Honor Society in 1965 (or it might have been 64????). Somehow I missed reading this book for all these years, but really enjoyed it.

Skinwalkers at the Pentagon

It is putting me to sleep at night when not making me nauseous. The fawning praise of Senator Dirty Harry is just gross.

It does have a few insights into the recent UAP flap. Got it for free with my Amazon Unlimited. Worth the price.

Please excuse the fact that I can’t remember the author’s:
“At the Springs with George” is about Washington’s connections to Berkeley Springs (Bath), WV.
“Civil War Winchester” and “Shenandoah County in the Civil War: Four Dark Years” are books that talk about the day to day lives of the civilian population during the Civil War.
I am currently in the third of six books in the Everyday Life in America Series.
