Illinois set to eliminate cash bail in 2023

VIENNA, Ill. (KFVS) - Come January 1, 2023, the State of Illinois is set to eliminate the cash bail system.

However, southern Illinois lawmakers and law enforcement say it could make communities more dangerous.

“I believe the elimination of cash bail, particularly as it’s written in the SAFE-T Act, will reduce public safety and lead to more crime particularly more violent crime in Illinois,” Patrick Windhorst, former state’s attorney and current state representative for district 118, said.

Windhorst said he voted against this bill when it came about. He said he was one of the leading voices against it.

The Illinois SAFE-T Act is legislation aimed at overhauling the state’s criminal justice system.

“I know that talking with prosecutors and law enforcement officers, they’re really concerned that the public is going to point the finger at them and say, ‘Why aren’t you doing more about these offenses?’ And with this major change in the law, beginning January 1st, a lot of their ability to do their jobs has been restrained,” he explained.

The Johnson County sheriff agreed with Windhorst.

“Anyone sitting in jail right now with all these pending charges, they’re going to be let out,” Johnson County Sheriff Peter Sopczak said. “The gates are open and they’re going to be let out onto the streets.”

A sample list (probably not complete) of alleged non-detainable crimes; for which, no bail is required.

Aggravated battery Aggravated DUI Aggravated fleeing Arson Burglary Drug-induced homicide Intimidation Kidnapping Robbery 2nd degree murder threatening a public official

Can't make this stuff up.

SAFE-T Act? Talk about the Law of Unintended Consequences.

(Or unstated intentions)

The public has the power to put a stop to this madness.

The public is stupid to a level that I could never have believed.

This will cause crime to explode in every city in Illinois. So if the idea is to make Los Angeles and New York look better by comparison, I think it will work.

It sounds like people will have a second chance to use deadly defense against bad guys.

The gambit is but yet another attempt to mimic the UK and possibly Australia.

There, they have what is known as “police bail” where on order of cops, the suspect is charged and then released on “police bail”

In Illinois they apparently going one degree further and no bail is required for even severe crimes

The Queen is dead but the destructive following of what was once Great Britain continues in America

Fine. Keep 'em locked up until trial then, especially for violent crimes.
And BTW, let the J6 political prisoners out.
Actual criminals are receiving more compassion than they do.

Citizens are going to need to start taking matters into their own hands for their own safety.

The government we have which is supposed to protect us and enforce the rule of law equitably, has no only failed us, but betrayed us and turned on us.

The democrats willingly inflict massive harm on the folks just so they can pretend to be helping one segment of the population. They aren’t helping that segment, which commits crime all out of proportion to their numbers.

If ever there was a place that needs more criminals on the street, it’s Illinois! Especially Chicago! Do they not care, or are they just insane?

Governor J. B. Pritzker whines whenever his opponent attacks him for being soft on crime, but Pritzker is the fool who signed this awful legislation into law. Any intelligent governor would have vetoed such a stupid bill.
