Xcel took over thermostats of thousands of customers for the first time

For the time ever, Xcel Energy locked the smart thermostats of thousands of Colorado customers on Tuesday because of what it called an energy emergency.

Xcel started a program six years ago, called the AC Rewards program, in which customers get rebates in exchange for allowing Xcel to adjust their thermostat on the hottest summer days to ease strain on the electrical grid. Participating customers need to sign up for the program, and about 22,200 have done that in Colorado.

Tuesday was the first time that Xcel locked those thermostats, a company spokesperson said.

The grid experienced an energy emergency that day, due to high temperatures and a unit at a power plant that went offline. The company was not selling energy out of state, Xcel said.

Xcel customers who have certain types of smart thermostats can opt into the AC Rewards Program. They get a onetime $100 enrollment bill credit and $25 every year they participate in the program.

“We understand the need to keep cool on hot summer days and work hard to provide our customers with the energy they rely on," Xcel said in a statement provided to 9NEWS. "Our customers have a choice to participate in this voluntary program that helps them manage energy demands while receiving cash for their involvement."

Xcel says on its website that "control events" – when Xcel makes adjustments to the thermostats of participating customers – can happen at anytime during the summer.

“And you wouldn’t want a set of speaker/microphones for every smart device.”

I use my car speaker/microphones .

my old, paranoid roommate used to have a pin on his bass amp (which he unfortunately rarely played considering how good he was) that said
BEWARE! THE GOVERNMENT IS TAKING OVER THE COUNTRY

He was always fearful that “the govt” was watching him (even though he never did anything) and i used to say “dude you really think the govt has “people” whose job is to track a mid 20’s handyman/cabinet installer who’s the captain of his bowling team?”

With the chinks outnumbering us by 4 to 1, it wouldnt be so hard for THEM to watch the 50-75 million deplorables like us.
Chang Wu can sit in Shanghai monitoring his 25 person case load to make sure we don’t have too much of a free mind.
I’m sure they can access all of our emails and probably most of our digital lives if they really want to.

The chicoms (and thus the US govt) can probably map out all of FR members to our actual identities if they really wanted to.

“We wondered why at that time of the day.

Maybe it was a signal to the EV owners to start recharging their vehicles.”

They sent it because peak demand was over and they had extra power for your A/C.

On the bright side, they'll only shut off your AC/car charger/heat/power/internet/phone/etc., when you really need it!

I fell for that scam about 30 yrs ago. It worked exactly like you described.

The first time it shut the compressor off on a hot day I uninstalled and disposed of it.

BTW, name another business that asks you to not buy/use their product(s), then raises the price because their sales are down. I think that's the new business model taught in the indoctrination centers.

To All: Below is what we got via our phones last night at 9:45 from PGE&$'s. PG&E Customer Service Sep 7, 2022, 9:32 PM (12 hours ago) Conditions have improved and rotating outages will not be required today. "Conditions have improved, and rotating outages are not required at your address today. We strongly encourage customers to continue conserving energy to help avoid the need for future rotating outages." Again, was this a signal to EV owners to go ahead and recharge their EV's.

I expect soon that to have a new house hooked to the grid you will need to “agree” to have a smart thermostat installed. And it might be smart enough that your furnace or AC won’t work with a dumb thermostat or just manually shorting the right wires together.

WE have never been late to pay any PG&E bill for 50+ years, nor any bill.

So why install an expensive meter in our home or homes of similar customers?

They should know via the credit bureau, the difference between deadbeats and reliable paying customers.

Not a business. A regulated utility.

…customers need to sign up for the program, and about 22,200 have done that in Colorado.

immadashell : "Is it possible to unsign up once you have signed up previously? "

My Comment) : Unknown
However, I am sure that you would probably be charged the $100.oo signing bonus on you next utility bill.
Ain't nothing free !
It probably wouldn't hurt to change out your electronic thermostat, just to be on the 'safe side' regarding future utility company interruptions.

These thermostats will be MANDATED by politicians everywhere because it fulfills their religious objective - to control our energy.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I believe these remote controlled thermostats are mandated for new construction in California. (or parts of CA)
