Burning Man partiers were battered by a huge sandstorm over the weekend that threatened to ruin the finale of nine-day-long Nevada festival as hundreds left early to escape the dust while others strip off in 102F heat.
The dust storm hit the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, where it's been held since the early 1990s, on Saturday just before the main Burning Man event on Sunday — where the wooden 'man' effigy is ignited.
The week-long festival has long been a tradition, frequented by scantily-clad individuals looking to let loose and soak in the event's characteristically psychedelic atmosphere.
Burning Man's official handle tweeted that the desert area, known as the 'playa,' was experiencing 'whiteout conditions.'
For a short time, the main gate was closed in both directions due to the conditions and festival goers were urged not to drive because vehicles were becoming stranded and lost on the playa.
The official Burning Man's official webcam showed how visibility was virtually nonexistent as others on social media reported that the dust was thick enough to block out the sun.

I worked in Gerlach right when burning man started. The playa used to be the beginning of the wilderness, now it might as well be LA. All of the natural hotsprings ringing the area have all now have the encephalitis bug due to years of constant hippie juice and are all unusable. Unfortunately, they have discovered other places like Kumiva Valley and Blue Wing and the Lava Beds (cool unique rock formations and natural arches) area nearby and are working on closing those areas down. They have just about destroyed what was left of the few ghost towns left in the Seven Troughs mountains nearby by taking a stone here, or a piece of machinery there. They closed down all of the roads from the fly geyser side of the Granite Range to prevent people from accessing skull meadows and the entire east side of the range specifically to stop deer and antelope hunting as they also locked the entire Calico Range and the north end of the black rock range from soldier meadows and paihute peak north into wilderness areas also to stop deer hunting, and pretty much blocked off vast areas all the way north through summit lakes and the Sheldon antelope range all the way to Denio, as this was Clintons last act in office.
I’d think they’d all have monkeypox by now anyway.
Covid is so over—probably Monkeypox.
;-)
Yeah, the sand gets in everything.
And I do mean, EVERYTHING.
God was sand-blasting the dirty stinky hippies.
I’ve seen vehicles on the road that were coming from Burning Man, and the cars and everything in them including the occupants were covered in a layer of light-colored dust. Sound like fun!
Should film scenes for the next Mad Max movie.
i can’t shrug loud enough
Sound = Sounds
Better hope the air cleaner on the vehicle is good and replace it as soon as you get back.
I'm sure a great many people gate-crash. Others might get a "press pass," or pay for it via sex or drugs given "under the table." Only a minority of chumps pay the full $400.
OK, I’ll settle for crab lice for just the participants. :)
“Individuals looking to let loose.” I am confused by Burning Man and do not understand the attraction. Sure, execs who operate Burning Man in San Francisco are slick professionals. But the events and customers are not interesting. Why not go river rafting in Utah, hiking in Oregon, or mountain biking in Tahoe? I have a friend who went this year for his 16th time.
Yup. They are all over Reno for the next couple days. Weird they want to be all anti and “burn THE man” but how much resources are wasted at and to put on the event. And these days it is very expensive.
AMEN!!
Doesn’t that happen every year?
I’ve never gone I’m not an “influencer” don’t even have an Instagram account and I don’t heed to pay someone $400 to make my life seem interesting.
Burning Man is not entirely inappropriate at a temperature of 102°.
Burning Sand Man?
A fool and his money are soon parted...
One of the guys I knew did get free or much-reduced admission in return for helping in the medical tent. He claimed there were very few successful gate-crashers. As to the other things you mention, I don’t know.
I’d bet the total gate is still north of $20 million, though. No shortage of chumps out there.
