Wow. I am trying to remember another forfeit. A search mentions the following:

In 2013, Peruvian Jorge Cori was two minutes late to his game and was forfeited at the World Chess Cup. Cori has misheard the start time of 6:15 as 6:50 and forfeited round 1.

In 2012, Grandmaster Mamedyarov was forfeited his game at the European Chess Championship when he arrived at his board 10 seconds after the officially stated start time. Later, he and his opponent were forfeited for agreeing to a draw in 19 moves. Mamedyarov then immediately quit the tournament and left.

In January 1962, Lisa Lane forfeited her games from a tournament in Hastings, saying she was homesick and in love and could not concentrate.

In 1961, Bobby Fischer forfeited Game 12 against Sammy Reshevsky over a scheduling conflict. Fischer then withdrew from the match and resigned in protest.

There have actually been many other forfeits but usually under a protest of some kind.

Look up Bobby Fischer before he quit playing chess.

I personally hope that Carlsen has a better excuse than Ms. Lane from above.

(Or maybe it will be the same excuse ... ?)

Fischer also forfeited the second game of his world championship match against Boris Spassky because he objected to the movie cameras set up in the hall.

“Cori has misheard the start time of 6:15 as 6:50”

We get this a lot in the biz. We have casting calls, and some actors would come in with this excuse. Now we simply lock the door with security and we dont care if the studio president knocks on it.

First reports: After yesterday’s tough loss to 19-year-old Hans Niemann, World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen decided to withdraw from the Sinquefield Cup 2022. Carlsen didn’t explain his reasons for withdrawal but only said that he always enjoyed playing in the Saint Louis Chess Club and that he hopes he will be back in the future. The first information that could be heard in medias was that Carlsen decided not to play the 4th round against Mamedyarov. However, he posted on his official twitter account that he withdraws from the event.

I’m a big fan, and he is probably the greatest player of all time.

That said, he struggles with autism, and by his own admission, thinks of nothing every moment except chess. He must be under such intense pressure to perform, and increasingly, intense pressure to walk away.

It must be paradoxical in that he is so good at chess and it has been so good to him, but at the same time it is essentially a worthless pursuit.

The trouble is, he probably realizes this and must think about what else can he do with his life.

For some interesting chess forfeitures: https://www.chessmaniac.com/forfeiting-in-chess/

I always figured Lane was a burn-out case waiting to happen. There was way too much Fischer-mania going on for her to live up to (she reportedly said she quit the game because she was tired of being introduced to people at a "chess champion").

As for Magnus... no comment. lol

Interesting that one of the previous forfeits was by Grandmaster Mamedyarov.

Who was also Carlsen’s opponent today.

Being on the autism spectrum will certainly make him a better player, but would make him hard to live with.

In all fairness he did just sell the MagnusCarlsen.com brands to another chess company for about $60 million.

Hope that someone out there is truly looking out for his best.

Seems to me that a lot of chess players are thin-skinned.

It seems like such an intense game.

To my knowledge, there was one hit pop song about chess and here it is:

Murray Head - One Night In Bangkok.

“He must think about what else can he do with his life.” Very true. He is the best ever and he has nothing to prove. Mr. Carlsen, please quit pro chess and open a school with a cool building, good teachers and reasonable tuition.

Carlsen now has added sore loser and spoiled brat to his long list of accomplishments. If I was a chess tournament organizer, I wouldn’t invite him again, in spite of his #1 ranking.

If they never invited players who ever acted like a spoiled brat or a sore loser, attendance would be slim, average rating much lower.

I hadn’t heard that ... yet.

If so then it would be a big blow to the SLCC, and they are one of the good guys in the US.

Neimann (Badly) Discussing the Game Against Firoudja

From an article from chess.com. This is printed in the article, verses the quotes from the comments section down below.

Online chess fans and commenters were quick to speculate. GM Hikaru Nakamura theorized that Carlsen withdrew because he suspected Niemann of cheating in their game the previous day, saying: "I think that Magnus believes that Hans probably is cheating." - Wow - and from Hikaru ...

In an interview after the game, Niemann mentioned that he prepared based on Carlsen's use of the g3 Nimzo-Indian against GM Wesley So in London 2018. However, this game does not exist, and Chess.com has not been able to locate any other modern game by Carlsen in this line.

==========

Here are some comments regarding this article from chess.com.

Initially I was in doubt that Niemann was cheating. Afterwards I saw the interview he gave to Alejandro Ramirez just after the game with Alireza finished.

Alejandro is my new hero. He disactivated the engine and asked Niemann to show lines and variations of his game against Firoudja. Niemann was in panic and was throwing random moves like a patzer. Alexandro Ramirez, who's rating is much lower than Hans Niemann was showing much better understanding of the potential variations. Please watch this video before claiming that Hans Niemann is innocent.

Another comment:

We know for sure that Hans lied. He had not prepped that line based upon Magnus' prior games. So why the lie? It's extremely suspicious and very likely that Hans did cheat. Further investigation should be conducted to possibly determine how. That fact that Alejandro Ramirez illustrated Hans' inability to replay the lines shows further likelihood of cheating.

In response the St Louis Chess Club will be increasing scrutiny of potential irregularities:

After the round began, the Grand Chess Tour announced that they are taking additional anti-cheating precautions, including a 15-minute broadcast delay and increased radio-frequency identification (RFID) checks.

Before I married and had kids I would play 8 - 12 chess games daily.

Even with no coaching I rapidly became a better player, and have a few quality wins over players ranked much higher.

So when I heard that Neimann couldn’t discuss his games against Firoudja, I suspected that something is wrong.

I never made it much over 1800/1900, and could recreate games for most of the day before it all just blended together.

These guys are on another level, and regularly play 10+ hours daily looking at many, many possible combinations.

Fischer was noted for studying Russian chess magazines and being able to recall games that he only saw the notations for, years after reading about the game.

Something does seem off.
