Sexually abused 15-year-old died by suicide when Alabama youth facility ignored pleas for help, lawsuit claims

A 15-year-old resident of an Alabama youth treatment facility died by suicide in April after he was repeatedly sexually, emotionally and physically abused at the facility and his pleas for help ignored, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday.

The wrongful death lawsuit was filed against the former Sequel TIS of Tuskegee facility in Macon County, which has rebranded under the name of Brighter Path, on behalf of the family of Connor Bennett.

Attorneys Tommy James of Tommy James Law and Jeremy Knowles of the Morris Haynes law firm filed on behalf of Connor’s mother, Ashley Crittenden.

The attorneys have filed previous lawsuits against Sequel and other youth psychiatric treatment facilities that they say are part of a “troubled teen industry,” a network of for-profit youth residential facilities where widespread abuse and neglect has been revealed.

Lawyers for the facility and company did not immediately respond to today’s lawsuit.

Connor suffered from behavior issues that led the Alabama Department of Human Resources to take custody of him in September 2021.

On Oct. 5, 2021, he was placed by DHR into the Tuskegee youth facility.

“The facility was a living hell for Connor. It was scary and dangerous despite being a place for the most vulnerable and troubled children,’’ the suit states.

“Violence was rampant. Connor was physically, sexually, verbally and emotionally abused by staff and other residents.”

The lawsuit contends that Connor and the other residents had little to no supervision. As a result, attorneys say, Connor was “living an unimaginable nightmare and always feared for his safety.”

Connor escaped from the facility several times, the suit states, and staff would rarely notice he was gone.

“Connor and some of the other residents made numerous reports of the sexual abuse he was enduring to facility staff and their supervisors,’’ according to the lawsuit.

“Despite these cries for help, staffing ignored the reports and chose to do absolutely nothing to prevent the abuse so the assaults on Connor continued. Connor was desperate and felt he had lost all hope.”

On April 5, 2022, Connor hanged himself at the facility.

He was taken to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and then airlifted to Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham where he remained on life-support until April 11, when he was officially declared dead.

Connor grew up in Mobile, and enjoyed playing basketball and spending time with his family, according to his obituary.

“He cherished his family and had a heart of gold,’' the obituary stated.

“In his passing, he was able to save a minimum of four other lives by being an organ donor. His light will forever shine in those lives he has touched.”

Brighter Path (formerly Sequel) operates several Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities for youth in Alabama. The Alabama Department of Human Resources and the Alabama Department of Youth Services certify and license these facilities.

In 2020, two Alabama agency heads said they were investigating complaints of physical and verbal abuse by workers at four psychiatric treatment facilities for children.

In a public letter, the Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program wrote they have “grave concerns about the immediate safety and welfare” of the nearly 100 children, aged 12 to 18, currently in facilities run by Sequel TSI of Alabama, a Huntsville-based provider.

Sequel rebranded as Brighter Path following a barrage of abuse scandals and media attention in Alabama and across the country, James said. Many states have revoked contracts with the companies and no longer place children in their facilities due to repeated cases of abuse.

However, James said, Alabama continues to place children in these facilities. The facility in Tuskegee and their other facilities in Alabama have been in the news after a watchdog group found horrendous abuse, neglect and deplorable living conditions.

“Children are being physically, verbally and sexually abused in these facilities daily. People should be outraged that this is happening in our state and across the country,’’ James said. “Something must be done to ensure these children are safe and receive the treatment they need.”

“Connor suffered unimaginably because the staff at this facility failed to do their jobs,” James said. “The facility was a living hell for him, and it is inexcusable the abuse was allowed to continue despite numerous warnings. The relentless abuse was too much for him and sadly, he took his own life.”

James said the state is well aware of these facilities’ history of mistreating residents.

“The state is fully aware of the ongoing abuse in these facilities and still places children in them,” James said.

“The Governor and Attorney General should immediately launch an investigation to determine why this is happening. These facilities must be shut down, or our elected officials must ensure they are safe. How many more kids must die before something is done to protect our children.”

James and Connor’s family hope this lawsuit leads to positive change.

“What happened to this child was entirely preventable and should have never happened,” James said.

“Connor’s family hopes holding those accountable who utterly failed to protect him will prevent this from happening to any more innocent children.”

It was a male, that’s why.

Gynosociety doesn’t give a shiite about men.

Look at a woman funny and you’re jailed. Worse, turn a woman down and get assaulted by her.

My son was attack at a camp by three black boys. We called the police and had it investigated. The prosecutor turned the case down saying there wasn't enough to go on which was absolute BS! Nobody takes the abuse of males seriously, especially other men.

I had an Anthropology professor in college. She was a classic Leftwing Lesbian nutcase. Her specialty was domestic violence. Did you know there is a huge epidemic of this? It’s, like, the worst problem in the country. And no one listens to the victims of domestic violence. They need to be heard! People need to pay attention! And it’s all because men just suck.

So I brought in a news story (from the NYT!!) saying that women typically initiate domestic violence, and while the women sometimes become the victim after starting it, most victims of domestic violence are men. But men are silent because no one will listen to them.

My professor looked at the article and shrugged: “Those men probably deserved it.”

Remember when the Turpin kids were rescued. Social Services placed several of the kids with a family known for abuse. In that household they were again starved, and subjected to sexual abuse.
The kids are doing better. But, to escape one lifetime of horror, then be placed into the same thing is just unforgivable.

That’s just terrible. I’m so sorry. I can fathom the pain and frustration trying to get justice in a system that is not willing.

In gynosocieties men are replaceable appliances. ATMs. Security for women. Only concern about them is if they supply useful utility to women.

They're at school board meetings looking for white terrorist parents who have the audacity to challenge what their children are being taught. Or they're looking for more MAGA domestic terrorists at Republican rallies.
