Astronomy Picture of the Day - Sea and Sky Glows over the Oregon Coast

Explanation: Every step caused the sand to light up blue. That glow was bioluminescence -- a blue radiance that also lights the surf in this surreal scene captured in mid-2018 at Meyer's Creek Beach in Oregon, USA. Volcanic stacks dot the foreground sea, while a thin fog layer scatters light on the horizon. The rays of light spreading from the left horizon were created by car headlights on the Oregon Coast Highway (US 101), while the orange light on the right horizon emanates from a fishing boat. Visible far in the distance is the band of our Milky Way Galaxy, appearing to rise from a dark rocky outcrop. Sixteen images were added together to bring up the background Milky Way and to reduce noise.

“Sixteen images were added together to bring up the background Milky Way and to reduce noise”

I know why this is done, but it is getting far away from typical photography. More computer manipulation.

Thanks, those are some nice pictures that bring back memories. One of my friends threw a frisbee from the top of Cape Sebastian on a perfectly calm day (doesn’t happen often there) and made it to the ocean.

I thought it was Myers Creek, but maybe it is Meyers. Long time ago. I just checked on Google Earth and they spell it both ways, so that’s no help.

A beautiful photo of the Oregon coast near Heceta Head.

I tried to post the image - not just the link - but it didn't work for some reason.

It takes a couple of seconds to switch to the image - so wait for it.

Here

Ain't that purty?
I spent some relaxing time there on the beach.
Beautiful place.

"Looks like a nice area!"

.

Douglass county Oregon was the most gorgeous place I've ever lived - hands down.
(And I've lived in NJ, VA, NC, SC, AZ, OR and NV.)

If it were not for all of the rain and the forest fires, it would be paradise.
The three seasons there are: Rain, Spring and Forest Fire.

And some advice - NEVER go hiking alone and UNARMED up on Red Butte.
There are mountain lions up there.
I met one once years ago.

It either wasn't hungry, didn't think I would taste good or thought
that I wasn't worth the trouble - what with the way I was holding up
that big rock in a very threatening manner.

But really - it was the good Lord sparing me from the consequences
of my own incredible stupidity.

Red Butte and the whole O&C forest land area is very gorgeous.
But if you go, bring a firearm - and a spare tire for your properly outfitted 4x4.

Just trust me on these things - for your own safety.

"... temps are projected to be 110~112..."

.

Try to stay cool.
Crank up the AC.
Have some lemonade.
Sit under the lawn sprinkler.
Good Luck!
