Electric Car Batteries Lasting Longer Than Predicted Delays Recycling Programs
“Almost all of the [electric car] batteries we’ve ever made are still in cars,” said Nissan executive Nic Thomas.
“And we’ve been selling electric cars for 12 years,” he added.
Gas cars that I've seen on a dyno lose about 12% of their hp to the wheels, not 75%.
They can run the front or rear wheels up on a dolly and no need the hook onto the car body.
B-U-T.....are theses EVs all AWD? If you put two wheels on a dolly and tow the car, does it do any damage to the electric motor on each wheel that is still on the ground and turning at highway speeds? Or do all four wheels need to be on dollies? These EVs WILL turn out to be big PITAs, even beyond the ruination of the mined areas, and the horror of many acres of scrapped batteries.
“But some manufacturers change processes or materials without notifying you.”
EV manufacturers are working directly with recyclers to insure capability even BEFORE new battery designs hit the market.
“Gas cars that I’ve seen on a dyno lose about 12% of their hp to the wheels, not 75%.”
1. You never took a thermodynamics course.
2. A dyno does not show drive train loss.
LOL!
If you tow an EV at highway speeds you can charge the battery
Sissymobile
...kinda like an Oldsmobile, but your grandpa would never drive one.
“Gas cars get about 25% to the pavement.”
Another factfail brought to us by the “anyone who rides a Harley Davidson motorcycle is in a gang” fountainoffoolishness.
Anyone who’s had their engines on the dyno refute your failing foundering.
First hand knowledge.
...that is all
Sissymobile stands!
Wear it soyboi
It does if you measure the engine separately then measure it in the car at the wheels. But 15% is the universally recognized drivetrain loss.
By far most of the loss is in the combustion cycle. Most of the heat of combustion is absorbed in the engine or just remains in the exhaust gases.
But no one ever cared much because it was so much better than the horse or steam engine it replaced.
I would expect someone who took a thermodynamics course to know this and not attribute it to "drivetrain losses" (which would mean the transmission and differential would need active cooling to handle that much energy lost to heat.)
When EVs are better than ICE vehicles no starry eyed, dishonest fanboys will be needed to hawk them.
A pressure cooker type set up with a non-oxygen environment, some inert gas, should work. But the required heat could only be supplied by a nuclear reactor, since oil, gas and coal are verboten. Oh...wait...
That’s why they want to reduce the population by 95%, so they won’t need as much of that hated energy!
It’s not dead it’s just pining for the plugs.
“If I had to drive an electric car, I’d be carrying a gas generator and an extra gallon or two of gas.”
No need, this is why 78% of EV owners also own a real car, while less than 1% of ICE car owners have an electric virtue signaling machine.
I can see having an electric for runabout use as my #4 vehicle, but right now they are way too expensive.
“I would expect someone who took a thermodynamics course to know this and not attribute it to “drivetrain losses” (which would mean the transmission and differential would need active cooling to handle that much energy lost to heat.)”
Who attributed these large losses to the drive train? Not me!
OTOH, my transmission and differential have active cooling.
” Most of the heat of combustion is absorbed in the engine “
Carried off as waste heat.
“an electric car from DC ran out of battery”
Car from DC
Charged with AC
Driver and passengers most likely AC/DC
They should have done the owner a favor, and just pushed it down a mine shaft.
Gas cars get about 25% to the pavement.”
