The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

Solved it quickly, but had to think about the words for more than a few minutes before the full impact of what they meant sunk in. WOW. The author is so right! And especially pertinent after Joe’s hellish speech.
