Grandma, 93, died after care home staff ‘served her washing up liquid instead of juice’

A 93-year-old grandmother with dementia died after being ‘accidentally poisoned’ when care home staff served her washing up liquid instead of juice.

Gertrude Elizabeth Murison Maxwell suffered ‘severe blistering of her mouth, throat and oesophagus’ after she was fed the corrosive liquid, reports suggest.

The mother-of-eight, who had 20 grandchildren, is one of three residents at Atria Park Senior Living Facility in San Mateo, California who were mistakenly given the ‘caustic’ liquid instead of grape juice and rushed to hospital, according to NBC.

Staff have been suspended while police investigate the tragedy, which happened on Saturday.

According to the New York Post, Ms Maxwell’s daughter, Marcia Cutchin, said the substance was an ‘alkaline solution that eats protein’.

‘Many people, like my mother, you have to hold a cup to her mouth and tip it into her mouth,’ she told local network KRON-TV.

The care home confirmed three residents were transported to hospital after ‘mistakenly being served dishwashing liquid as drinking juice’ and offered ‘sincerest condolences’ to the family of Ms Maxwell.

Oops sorry the uk paper reported it. Thought if was another nhs case.

We mimic them closely with elderly in assisted living places. Not all are equal but its not hard to find a bad one.

Our countyb used to have a nursing home before it was taken over but a private downstate operation. They had posted warnings for the staff not to take photos of the residents and post them on social media (deriding and mocking them)

I strongly doubt that was a “mistake”.

That’s not true. People are certainly influenced by the groups they belong to.

Families, frienships, churches, work cliques.

It’s California, so the likelihood of an illiterate illegal is high.

From the experience of my sister’s English father-in-law, the NIH does very little for elderly patients nearing the end. He was put in a ward, presumably fed and watered but not much else, until he died in a few days.

It used to be said that in the US, 90% of Medicare expenditures went for treatments in the last 60 days of the patients’ lives. On a macro scale, that implies the British are making a sensible use of resources while we as usual waste collosal sums to impose a few more weeks of misery. On a individual scale, that of course seems much different.

I took care of my parents in their later years. Made sure they went out as nicely as possible. I had to give up my life and career for a good many years, but, in retrospect, it was one of the great experiences of my lifetime. As an adult, I had forgotten how much fun my parents were (we had fun every day until the very end) and was reminded just why and how much I loved them.

I wouldn't put one of my cats in a nursing home to die, given what I know about their treatment of people.

My brother on the other hand thought our parents should be put in a nursing home and ignored. He and I don't speak anymore.

You are undoubtedly correct in some ways. And it's not as racist as it sounds.

It is naive virtue signaling to say or think otherwise.

If a person harbors anger toward others (particularly racial anger), that anger will come out when that person has power over someone who is the object of that anger.

And there is NO POWER over others like taking care of them when they are most vulnerable (i.e., in a nursing home).

This is a cruel truth about humans, but it is real none-the-less.

Not a good idea to expose your parents to caretakers who might be angry at people like them for whatever reason.

I guess a person on the outside looking in could say that ‘All Freepers are racists’, just because some of us can’t resist the impulse to throw around smartass ‘Amish’ comments.

Well, you are correct.

But that said, they already call us "racists" (and fascists) if only because we disagree with them.

They (the Leftists) have absolutely ruined the language that was once reasonably descriptive. The word "racist" used to mean something.

And if memory serves correctly, most people wanted to wipe racial stereotyping off the planet.

But somewhere along the line, it became okay to be racist against some people, just not others. You could hate Whitey all you wanted to...that became a virtue in some circles.

Long story, short, the Leftists have used "critical theory" to turn our world upside down and destroy our language by giving it a political tilt. Perhaps it's about time we start to "deconstruct" their language by using it against them. In plainer terms, if we're racists because we just speak the truth, then so be it...let's just speak the truth and let the chips fall where they will.

Some, maybe more than just some, black people (and white liberals) hate us because we're "white." When those same people have jobs taking care of us and our loved ones in nursing homes, we can expect them to express their hatred toward us by being cruel.

If we cannot speak about such a thing, what are we then? The word "coward" comes to mind.
