A young Ohio man is fighting for his life after he was stung by bees more than 20,000 times and swallowed about three dozen of the buzzing insects.
Austin Bellamy, 20, was trimming a lemon tree last week when he unknowingly cut open a beehive, releasing thousands of African killer bees that quickly swarmed around his head, neck and shoulders, his mother, Shawna Carte

God bless him. I had a rough time with 6 ground yellow jackets.
Ouch. That poor, poor man.
How horrific.
It’s bad enough being stung like that but to swallow some and get stung on the inside, too.
That is the stuff nightmares are made of.
Ok, new-found respect for the US medical system. Not that many countries in the world where you can get BEES SUCKED OUT OF YOUR BODY and survive 20,000 STINGS.
Going to re-watch 'The Swarm' now.
“swallowed about three dozen of the buzzing insects”
Well, if he doesn’t recover, at least he took some of them with him.
“It’s bad enough being stung like that but to swallow some and get stung on the inside, too.”
I guess that’s why mom always said to chew before you swallow.
Measurement estimate...makes sense.
Poor guy.
“ Africanized bees have made it all the way to Ohio?”
Lemon Trees made it all the way to Ohio?
Stung by 20,000 bees? Shoot. He should be next in line to win the lottery.
“20K stingers with poison sacks attached to remove from the body. A lot of time spent.”
20k dead bees ...
I had an acquaintance who had the misfortune of disturbing a hive while mowing grass on his lawn tractor. Happened in Oklahoma. Dead before EMT arrived.
It’s not “African killer bees”, it’s *African-ized* bees.
Trivia bit: Killer Bee honey is one of the tastiest honeys you can get. Instead of the pure amber color typical for honey, it is a red-amber color. It used to be stupidly expensive, but now the price is on par with normal honey.
The story contains no details as to how they got the bees off from him and got him down from the tree. It also does not say what happened to the bee’s. Did they stick around long enough to be terminated?
Died in service to their Queen.
Yes, that's a bad mix for any species.
lemon tree, in Ohio...
He took all them with him- honey bees that sting die. Small consolation.
Where else are they established? Inquiring minds want to know.
Being stung 20,000 times brought him out of a coma?
That’s great news!
That would make sense. Glad he’s okay. Florida Man thanks you.
