President Joe Biden this week pushed for a ban on military-style weapons as an answer to the nation’s rise in gun violence.
But critics say little evidence supports the notion that such a ban, in force for a decade from 1994 to 2004, would reduce the crime rates gripping most cities in America.
And some jurisdictions are struggling to enforce gun laws already on the books, raising questions about how they would find the resources to enforce even stricter ones.
“The vast majority of gun murder in the United States involves handguns and has for a very long time,” Stephen Gutowski, founder of the gun policy website The Reload, told the Washington Examiner. “An 'assault weapons' ban is very unlikely to have a significant impact on overall crime, everyday crime.”
Guns that fall into the “assault weapons” category are indeed used in just a fraction of crimes , data show.
According to an analysis from the National Institutes of Health, “most estimates suggest less than 7%” of the firearms used for “crime in general” were "assault weapons."
Most of the violent crimes that occurred in 2020 were committed with handguns, FBI data show.

In some areas, like Atlanta or Memphis....I doubt if in an entire year that some shooting-related crime involves an assault-type weapon. I would imagine fifty-percent of the wounds are knife related.
Banning ‘assault weapons’ has ZERO to do about crime…it is for disarming honest law abiding citizens…
Gun laws are for effeminate urban men, i.e. faggots.
Women like them because they are by nature not the hunter, men are. Like prohibition (a law pushed by women), gun laws are another such instance where a certain psychographic is behind policy destined to fail.
Finally socialists like these laws. They fear armed citizens that can resist their tyrannical rule. These modern day depot’s guided by some philosophical idea feel they can better FORCE their views on everyone else with a population of sheep and where the sheep dogs are made into sheep, because after all their views are right and you’re wrong.
Little to stop crime? How about a lot to increase crime!
The ban would just give the Mexican cartels a new product to smuggle across our open borders.
Exactly right, the politicians and their bosses in the deep state know they are deserving of violence, they know what happens when people run out of political solutions, they hope to reduce the chances that the mass population will be able to defend itself from their tyrrany
Oh, well see that would be okay! (-;
Joe’s elevator has fallen and can’t get up.
This type of camouflage can be used by the general public to avoid gun confiscation. Just put an international orange flash suppressor on your AR to make it look like a ‘real’ toy.
Interesting thought: Having a blaze orange tip on your fishing rod could buy you a valuable moment’s hesitation from an adversary during SHTF.
What’s “military style” about a souped-up .22 rifle?
Simple answer, weapons don’t cause crime. It’s the finger on the trigger that causes crime and until something is done to keep repeat offenders in jail, crime will continue to surge.
There hasn't been a day since the M-16 entered the military inventory that it wasn't being derided as a "poodle-shooter"* because of its undersized round. There still are several US states that won't allow big game hunting with such a small caliber bullet. And if it's not powerful enough to reliably take whitetail deer, where's the logic in using it on people?
* The .223 has proved a popular cartridge with varmint hunters, whose typical prey is about the size of a French poodle (toy, not standard).
But you've got to give it one thing, the AR-15 is one sinister-looking son of a gun. If Eugene Stoner hadn't invented it, it's a certainty Steven Spielberg would have so his Star Wars storm troopers could have the most bad-ass looking gun in the galaxy.
And that's a small part of why the AR is used by so many aspiring mass-murderers. Because it looks evil (AR aficionados enjoying mocking the hoplophobes by calling it the EBR, or Evil Black Rifle). But the bigger reason that so many mass murderers are drawn to the AR-15 is that the MSM insists on endlessly advertising it as the mass murderer's weapon of choice.
All these homicidal maniacs aren't buying ARs because they're weapons experts and selected it from everything available after carefully considering all the alternatives. Most of them are so gun-ignorant that they don't even know how to field strip the weapon for cleaning.
The reason they're buying ARs for the job is that the mainstream media won't shut up telling them it's the done thing. They've turned the AR-15 into a mass murderer's fashion statement.
Want to look hip in your crime lab death scene photos? Get an AR-15 and you'll be stylin'.
In a perverse twist, the MSM is pushing the narrative that arms manufacturers are increasing gun violence by targeting minors in their advertising. When the truth is, the stories from the hoplophobes in the MSM calling for the banning of all "military-style" firearms BECAUSE THE AR-15 IS SUCH A GREAT WEAPON FOR MASS-MURDERERS gets vastly more market penetration than what limited advertising the gun makers buy.
It's the pot calling the kettle black.
***BECAUSE THE AR-15 IS SUCH A GREAT WEAPON FOR MASS-MURDERERS***
One wonders why there were so few mass shootings from 1945-1968 when you could drop a check in the mail and a semi-auto military M-1 carbine with a 30 rd magazine would be shipped to your door.
Back then you could also get all sorts of military rifles and anti-tank rifles. Just drop a check in the mail.
Semi auto rifles have been used by the citizens of the US since 1906. That is 116 years ago, and 30 years before the US Army adopted the M-1 Garand.
False premise, these gun bans have nothing to do with crime.

5.56mm
Got my fill of M16s in the late ‘60s. Dad had this old Ithaca Mag 10 field grade. He somehow ran over the end of the barrels with jis pickup. Irreparable. I took the gun and cut the barrels back to 21”. Filed it up nice and square and used some cold blue and presto, Two 3 1/2” 10 gauge magnums, each with two onces of #2 shot is a lot of comfort. Just looking at the bore on that old girl gives me the willies. The shot pattern is quiet tight out to about 20 feet. It would stop a few savages coming through the door.
While many of the criticisms that you have directed at the AR-15’s standard .223/5.56 NATO chambering are valid, those same critiques also point to the virtues of the round. These are low recoil, ease of controllability for follow on shots, low weight and cost, lessened time for training proficiency, high velocity and good accuracy within it’s intended envelope of 500 yards and in. (although it is most effective within 350 yards)
The REAL virtue of the AR-15 is in the standardization of the mil-spec parts and it’s incredible versatility due to the modular construction of it’s upper and lower receivers. It is by no means limited to the 5.56/223 round. By either a simple barrel swap, which can be accomplished with very simple hand tools, or simply exchanging the complete upper receiver in mere seconds by pushing out 2 pins, an astonishing variety of chamberings (175 or more) can be had for this mature and superbly engineered platform.
I own 8 AR-15’s. Two are chambered for the standard 5.56 NATO M195 cartridge used in Vietnam and it’s subsequent iterations. One is chambered in .22 LR, the common squirrel cartridge. One is chambered in .300 Blackout, which fires a 125 grain bullet at an initial muzzle velocity of 2230 fps, with 1360 ft lbs. of energy at the muzzle. One is chambered in .458 SOCOM using a 250 grain bullet at 2150 fps and 3478 ft lbs. at the muzzle, and another in .50 Beowulf 300 grain bullet at 1870 fps, 2330 ft lbs. at the muzzle. One is chambered in 6.8 Wolverine cartridge using a 90 grain bullet at 2750 fps with 1510 ft lbs at the muzzle. The last is chambered for the .300 Ham’R using a 125 grain bullet at 2600 fps with 1765 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle. There are .410 shotgun upper receiver conversions that are available as well.
Compare this with the G.I. M195 Vietnam era cartridge firing a 55 grain bullet at 3,250 fps with a muzzle energy of just under 1300 fps. With the exception of the .22 LR round and my 5.56, they are all more powerful then the Vietnam era cartridge. The only limiting factor as to what cartridges can cycle through the AR-15’s action is the length of the cartridge (max 45 mm) due to the size of the mag well in the AR-15. (The AR-10 can accommodate cartridges 51 mm in length) But if you are willing to forego semi or full auto firing, I have seen bolt action single shot upper receiver conversions that allow a .50 Browning Machine Gun cartridge to be used with the lower receiver as the trigger control and stock group.
That is PRECISELY why Eugene Stoner’s brilliant design is arguably the most versatile firearm ever conceived. Once the receivers are assembled, they can be installed on ANY Mil-Spec lower receiver. They all use the same STANAG magazines (the .458 and the .50 Beowulf can only hold 10 rounds though) and the same bolt and bolt carrier. (The .22 LR requires a dedicated bolt carrier and barrel and a different magazine)
(The only specialized tool needed is a armorer’s wrench)
The 2nd amendment is about a militia. A militia is a body of citizens organized for military purposes and bearing weapons supplied by themselves and of the kind in common military use at the time. The RKBA IS about “weapons of war.” If we let turds like most leftist and RINO gun grabbers define the 2nd amendment as being for plugging bunny rabbits, we have negated it’s purpose altogether. The framers of the constitution did not write it to ensure your ability to hunt and blast paper targets. Most states require a license to hunt anyway.
If I was forced to own only own one rifle, then the AR-15, AR-10 and it’s variants is my go to choice every time.
Well, almost NOTHING to do with crime. Most murders are done with pistols... not with 'military style' rifles. But democrat's goal is to disarm law biding citizens - NOT to stop crime.
That has to be factored in.
So the lies and lack of honest crime statistics (because the FBI is as corrupt and owned as they come) allows democrats to get away with lying.
