… the prevalence of drugs at BUD/S has some men in the top reaches of the SEALs deeply unnerved…
Sailors who enter the program bolstered by steroids and hormones can push harder, recover faster and probably beat out the sailors who are trying to become SEALs while clean…the inevitable effect, he said, is that a course designed to select the very best will end up selecting only the very best cheaters…
….The Navy uncovered what the senior SEAL leader called “a steroid ring” in 2012. He said BUD/S began testing candidates that year, but the testing lapsed a few years later...
By 2016…Brandon Caserta went through BUD/S and told his father, Patrick Caserta, a retired Navy senior chief petty officer, that drugs were “rampant.”
… “He refused to do them, but he said the guys that did definitely had an edge,”…
… In a perverse way, the drug problem at BUD/S is a natural outgrowth of the mind-set the SEALs try to cultivate…
The SEALs want operators who can find unconventional ways to gain an advantage against the enemy, he said in an interview.
“You want guys who can solve problems in war, guys who know how to play dirty, because war is a dirty game,” he said.
An often heard unofficial adage in the SEALs holds that, “if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying.”
During BUD/S, he said, the “enemy” to be outfoxed is the course itself.
“No one can do everything the instructors ask, so you have to learn how to cheat to get through,” he said. “Everyone knows it happens. The point is to learn how to not get caught.”
“Basically, you are selecting for guys who are willing to cheat,” he added. “So, no surprise, guys are going to turn to drugs.”…

I’m not going to subscribe to the Slimes to read the article. I’ll look for it free online.
Anyone have a link?
Bmp
Free link..
Like the Bill Burr routine about Lance Armstrong...
Our roided up guy beat your roided up guys.
Hormone use throws your body out of whack.
Guys, use food and supplement choices to help heal, instead.
Gee, I breathily wait for the NYT’s to cover the “ Culture of Brutality, Cheating and Drugs in Gay Bath House which result in Deaths”.....
Total bullshit by pencil-neck-geek uber-woke NY Slimes smear merchants who hate SEALs because they epitomize everything that they hate.
Give them to them. Cycle on and off. Medical monitoring. They’ll be fine.
If its rampant...wouldnt there be a strict testing regimen in place to discourage it? Or shouldnt there be?
They want guys who have the wits and the balls to cheat. War ain’t the Olympics.
A hit piece on the US Military’s most elite, effective and feared special force. Not shocked.
Those guys are not just big, fit dummies. They are also intelligent. They are elite in every way. They know the costs and the risks. They are some of the worlds last true warriors. And I am glad they are on our team. I don’t care what they do to get through training and become what they are. I give them a lot of latitude. They’ve earned it.
As for the occasional training fatalities, it’s sad. It’s unfortunate. But, dare I say, it is a risk for the type of training they have decided to do. They also must know the danger of what they are training to do and could more easily die in battle. Take care of their families and move on.
Tell the left to go back to their pajama couch parties and suck each other’s thumb in a safe space.
A wimpy, girlyman journalism school jerk trashing the Navy Seals. That’s not very healthy. The boy needs to do a follow-up bad-mouthing article on the Hell’s Angels. LOL. Idiot.
Did anyone know that Joe Biden was a SEAL?? He said he was once a lifeguard with harry legs.....and kicked “corn Pop’s” ass big time.
Who didn't know this? It's like living in a movie.
"We're not recruiting with the Boy Scouts. We want people who are aggressive, who know how to go after that little edge you need to survive."
LOL. Jo Jo the seal.
“In the 1980s, about 40 percent of candidates graduated. Over the past 25 years, the average has dropped to 26 percent. In 2021, it was just 14 percent, and in Seaman Mullen’s class this year, less than 10 percent.”
An old college roommate of mine was a SEAL in the 80s / 90s and he told me essentially the same thing. The instructors continue to make the course more difficult and brutal and the attrition rate keeps rising. In his opinion it’s an issue of ego, arrogance and increasingly toxic environment like hazing at fraternities. Without proper oversight it just keeps gett5ing worse.
This whole article is just so stupid!
This whole article is just so stupid!
You hit the nail on the head. I was in the AF Special Ops and Rescue for over 30 years and dealt with SEAL teams on many occasions. These guys are so far above and beyond what people think they know about them. These guys aren’t just special operators and killing machines (both of which they do very well), they are poets, musicians, writers...I was astounded the depths of talents outside of the military that these guys possessed. There is something very special and unique about each and every one of them. I always looked forward to working with them because I knew that they would have my back if anything went south on a mission. I have the utmost respect for them and their counterparts in the other services.
