RAPPAHANOCK RAILROAD STATION, Wednesday, Aug. 20 -- 10 o'clock, P.M.

Gen. POPE's entire command, with the exception of a rear-guard, crossed the Rappahannock this morning. His advance commenced moving from Culpepper, at 3 o'clock, Monday evening, and the rear-guard left on Tuesday morning, at 9 o'clock, closely followed by the advance guard of the enemy. About half way between this point and Culpepper a smart skirmish took place between our rear-guard -- a portion of Gen. BAYARD's cavalry corps -- and a considerable force of the enemy, consisting of cavalry and artillery in which, among others, Lieut-Col. KARGE, of the First Pennsylvania Cavalry, was severely wounded. There was more or less skirmishing all day, and a general engagement was anticipated. Gens. WILLIAMS' and MCDOWELL's Divisions formed in line of battle to dispute the passage of the river, and were under arms all day. To-night everything is in readiness for the expected contest. Horses are saddled and harnessed, and artillery, infantry and cavalry are all in position, ready for any emergency. Not a tent is to be seen, except in one command; officers and privates alike are sleeping in the open air, and a battle is looked for certainly to-morrow morning.

THURSDAY, Aug. 21.

This morning, at an early hour, the rebels opened a battery upon the Third Maryland Regiment, stationed at a ford three miles up the river, and soon caused them to retreat. They had two men killed and several wounded. At a later hour -- about 12 M. -- a squadron of cavalry crossed the river about one mile still further on our right, and an infantry corps attempted to cross at about the same time. The cavalry charged upon a company of Indiana troops, commanded by Capt. WOOD, and were repulsed. A battery soon

The story “The Indian Massacres: Terrible Scenes of Death and Misery in Minnesota” was interesting.

An ancestor was part of the retreat of settlers from the vicinity of Eagle Lake, north of Willmar, to the fort at Forest City. They did encounter a band of Indians who took and butchered one of their oxen, but they were not harmed.

I have never heard that Missouri secessionists had anything to do with the outbreak of hostilities. That appears to be wartime propaganda.
