I would hide the fact that the state is a god, money is a god, military security is a god. I would (MOST IMPORTANTLY) -in a thousand different ways of subtlety, bewitch American Christians into the position that God is a means to an end... the preservation of our culture, or at least our nation. Because the whole focus is “saving America” rather than keeping the kingdom of God in focus, I would keep silly American Christians in a perpetual state of hope and expectation in one charismatic leader after another. It would not really matter if that man/woman were sincere. I would have them promising changes which can never occur because they require a people with character. Dazzle them with fake promises and then smash their hopes and leave them with despair. Hey, it is what I do. Witness hell, if you doubt me.

I would keep Christians in a shallow fascination with newspaper headlines, frantically running to proof text each event as evidence we are in the “last times” because of this or that historical anomaly. Huge on my list would be keeping Christians from any knowledge of historical figures like Augustine, who saw his own “America” collapsing from rot and perversity, laziness debt and idolatry, and was filled with hope, teaching in THE CITY OF GOD that institutions all rot and often collapse and are replaced, and that that the USA (Rome in his case) was just a vehicle to serve a bigger purpose. The constant drumbeat must be that America is the last great hope God has in the world. I would fill them with such fear that the idea of the breakup of the USA being a channel for greater blessing and freedom cannot even be entertained.

I would convince American Christians that the political entity of the USA was “good” and was not innately populated (as the founders believed) by knaves, rogues, charlatans, fools and devils. I would sell a fable of “back when we were a good country” and gurgle out lies that because there were recognizable truths in our founding documents, this means we are a good people. I would paint giant scare lies about how we are so exceptional, in fact, that we are the last great hope between global totalitarianism and freedom. I would use these to convince otherwise well meaning fools that because America is good, using our military to police the world and settle conflicts abroad and “fight terrorism” justifies bone crushing military budgets and aggressive military expansion, leading to monstrous evils, something the founders never dreamed of. I would continue to do what Paul Harvey said, which is to teach American Christians to pray to DC. Rather than teach men that cultures, laws, nations and peoples are intrinsically rotten I would teach them the lie that if we can just find the right angels to put in power, this will be the “awakening” we need. I would give government vast intrusive and restrictive powers, and then convince “patriots” that because “our guys” do it, it must be ok. I would mock, sneer, and assault as “anti American” and “anti military” those who insist that the primary way a totalitarian state increases its power is war.

I would fight with all my deception the notion that political and social institutions which are healthy are DOWNSTREAM from the ethics and character of a people. I would keep Christians focused on reforming the institutions, and thus make them susceptible to the flood of grifters, hypocrites, frauds and con men who will brazenly abuse their trust and secretly mock them, like Lee Atwater counseled HGW Bush “just throw some bible verses at them.”

The alt history I would feed them (as opposed to NO history in their schools! :) ), would be a mythical fiction that “we are the good guys in the world” and glom onto believing the stupid propaganda that a piece of paper from 1789 made us somehow “exceptional.”

I would not permit them to believe that with or without the USA, goodness will survive. Liberty will survive. Knowledge and learning and culture and beauty and wealth creation will survive and may in fact prosper and burn more brightly than before. Keep God small and world powers big.

In short, rather than trust in the City of God, or a new kingdom which will both swallow and destroy all earthly kingdoms because of rot, I would convince Americans that the kingdom of God is somehow especially intertwined with our nation, and that the principles of God’s kingdom will be set back thousands of years if it dissolves.

Above all, I would keep that order of focus in place. We need God because only God can save America, and America IS the kingdom of God. I would obscure the fact that this careless indifference to men and their kingdoms is -bizarrely enough- the ONE thing that will preserve those kingdoms, because the kingdom of God among them provides that social glue and goodness they vainly seek elsewhere.

Focus is EVERYTHING. All the stuff that are legit problems, from barbarianism, to fake money, to sexual cacophony, to laziness and corruption... all stem from the focus. It is a sleight of hand trick and If I do say so myself, I am VERY good at it. Got it? Nice trick, huh?
