On the internet today, larger tech companies like Google, Facebook, and Amazon can sometimes feel like inescapable presences. Google, in particular, tracks the way you use its search engine and other apps...
But the things Google keeps track of can actually extend far further than you might expect, given the prevalence of Google Analytics and Google’s ad networks. In an effort to better understand what kinds of data is sent to Google, where it happens, and when it occurs, developer Bert Hubert — best known as the original creator of PowerDNS — created a new app called “Googerteller.”
Googerteller works using the list of IP addresses — freely provided by Google — that are associated with the many Google services, but not those related to Google Cloud. Any time your computer connects to one of those IP addresses, whether while using a program or when browsing the web, you’ll hear a beep sound.
Unfortunately, Googerteller is currently only designed to work on Linux-based operating systems (Debian, Ubuntu, Arch, Fedora, etc)

Need that for Android.
Oh wait. Google ‘owns’ the OS ...
That would be a pita hearing my computer beep every couple seconds.
Swell, everyone is gonna get tinnitus now
The downside is that the app opens up your computer to some other snoop. Can’t win for losing.
I use a “NoScript” browser extension that allows me to tell any given site what scripts I will allow. Some are needed most the time to see anything on the webpage. I always leave the google-analytics off. It doesn’t cause any issues with the page but it does stop their info gathering to an extent. Amazon-ad’s is another one that’s used a lot.
If you use it you will find it to be a pain for a while as you figure out what scripts are needed and what aren’t. There’s an option to allow all scripts on that site for those times I’m feeling lazy.
An interesting point is FR doesn’t have any scripts except the base one for FR. It’s rare to find that.

The world got along just fine without the internet. In fact, the world was a better place without the internet. Sadly, there seems to be no going back.
If you’re using Android better get some earplugs.
Golden oppo for a port to Windoze.
That’s progress (or not).
Kudos to Jim for few or no trackers on FR!
I’m sure that the individual beeps blend into a constant tone at times.
I thought he mispelled “pity”. Which didnt’ seem like the most appropriate word to use.
Were many people even asking for this?
Linux, been around forever, is open source and has amassed a very large tech following since the geek community decided the world is fed up with the Punk Lords of Tech (Zuckerberg, Dorsey, Schmitt, Gates, etc.).
Jeff Peterson is one the leaders who started the Linux based takeover of tech. Started just recently, early 2021. They will get it done. They are a very sharp group and are dedicated.
